Interview with New York听Jazz听Musician & Mentor Matt Baker

We sat down with New York jazz pianist, entrepreneur, and coach Matt Baker to talk about the New York听jazz听world, his passions, his mentorship program, his own mentors, and the importance of keeping creativity alive at every stage of life.

Matt Baker

Matt is a world-renowned jazz听musician heralded as 鈥the Australian piano whiz鈥 by听The New York Times听and described by British music executive Tony Hall as 鈥one of the most respected and versatile pianist-composers yet鈥. Matt leads听The Matt Baker Trio听in New York and performs regularly at听jazz听venues including听叠颈谤诲濒补苍诲听补苍诲听The Blue Note. He tours both within the USA and internationally and has released 6 albums to date.

BAHS Founder Anita Rogers has had the pleasure of working with Matt as her coach for over a year now. Her goals were to step into the jazz world, vocally, master the repertoire and style, learn how to work with an accompanist and band, and then put on a concert. This goal was realized last May when Anita performed with the Matt Baker trio at听听in New York City. We are thrilled to announce that Anita will be doing a second jazz concert with Matt at the gallery on December 16.听

Thanks to a gentle push from Anita, Matt is now carving out space in his schedule to individually mentor a small number of people seeking a creative escape, whether through learning or returning to an instrument, stepping into New York鈥檚 jazz world, singing for pleasure, or even planning and preparing for a live performance at a major NYC venue.

After the interview, we are pleased to share Matt Baker鈥檚 new mentorship program,听The Encore Experience – An Artist鈥檚 Renaissance.听

Matt, can you please tell us a little about yourself?

I鈥檓 from Australia but I moved to New York about 15 years ago when I decided I had to leave Australia because I was plateauing, artistically. I just didn’t have the artistic fulfillment that I really wanted. I had been to New York several times before moving here, so I knew that it was all over here – so I applied for a visa, I got it eventually, and here we are 15 years later.

I’m a jazz musician first and foremost, but I am also a coach, entrepreneur, and photographer.听As a听jazz musician, I perform on the piano at gigs, jazz clubs, festivals, concerts in New York and around the world. I’m a听portrait photographer听as well – my shots inside NYC jazz clubs will be on view at Anita Rogers Gallery this December.

I’m also an听entrepreneur, I run an online course for singers that is not singing lessons, but it teaches singers to gain the confidence to get up on stage and put on a show. It鈥檚 everything that you need to know to be a great band leader, taught by me and three of the world’s top live performing vocalists. It鈥檚 a wonderful course for vocalists.

The fourth thing I do is听mentor.听I have this desire in my life, now at my age to give back and not just do things that benefit and fulfill听me. I have this real big desire to give back and with a bit of a push from Anita, I’ve decided to open up time and space in my life to coach and mentor a select group people who wish to have art and music and joy back into their lives, that they might have had at some point earlier in their lives but have lost. The way that I can do that is by bringing someone into my life, by either taking them around gigs and concerts and showing them the world that I live in, letting them experience the music and the art that I experience, helping them with their own music and art – whether it’s teaching them piano, helping them sing, assisting them in putting on a concert, helping them fulfill those dreams and desires and aspirations they might have had since they were a child even and for a long time. It鈥檚 a flexible program – it鈥檚 whatever works for them and whatever their needs may be – but the goal is to bring back music and joy into their lives.

Who is your mentorship program right for?

It鈥檚 for anyone听yearning for creativity and artistic connection. It鈥檚 for those who are constantly tied up with their job, homework, family 补苍诲听miss having something like music in their world. It鈥檚 for those who learned an instrument when they were younger, regret giving it up, and would kill to have even a piece of it back. It鈥檚 for those who听aspire to sing for friends at a great New York City venue听but don鈥檛 know how to achieve that. 听It鈥檚 for anyone who is missing something in their soul, artistically, and would like to find it again.

Did you have any mentors in the music world in particular that shaped your approach to your music and your style?

Absolutely. My main mentor is my teacher who I still learn from today,听Taylor Eigsti. It’s been 16 years of lessons with him. He is a fantastic, phenomenal world class pianist. He tours the world continuously, has won two Grammy awards for his albums, and he not only teaches me piano and jazz specifically, but sometimes in our lessons or phone calls, we talk about business, life, the career, and the world of music. So he has held my hand for the last 16 years, but I’ve also had many, many teachers that haven’t been as regular as him in my life but were also formative, including greats like听Benny Green,听James Williams, 补苍诲听Mulgrew Miller. I was fortunate enough that one of my first teachers was Ella Fitzgerald’s accompanist of 30 years – the great听Paul Smith. He taught me a lot about playing for singers and accompanying music. So yes, I鈥檝e had mentors in music and business for my entire life.

You mentioned how you moved from Australia to New York and understanding that New York was听the听place to be for your career. How would you describe the New York jazz community? Are there any jazz clubs in particular you’d recommend to the readers?

Absolutely. Well,听New York is just a mecca for art and music. Whether it’s jazz music or cabaret or musical theater, Broadway, whether it’s art, painting, sculpture, drawing installations, photography – it’s all here. So, it’s just this听melting pot of culture and creation and art in this city. And everyone wants to be here, so it’s the people that make it, really. Besides the music or the art and photographs you see in the galleries鈥t’s the people. It’s the energy of the people that really makes it so everyone aspires to be here. I find it’s like听everyone is here because they’re on some sort of creative mission听or have some sort of purpose or goal in the arts. It鈥檚 an incredible energy.

Specifically for jazz clubs, there’s so many, and that’s another great thing about why I’m here is because there’s听so much opportunity. Yes, there’s more competition but there’s so much opportunity in the sense of venues. Some of my favorites are听,听, and then other locations that aren’t necessarily jazz clubs, but they’re venues that have jazz on.听I play often at听. And the听, the听,听. But my favorite is definitely the听.

At what age did you first get into music? When did you know that this was such an important aspect of your creative soul?

Well, I got into music at the age of five, I started learning classical piano back home in Australia. At 12, I changed to jazz. And in my late teens, I started to discover a lot of the jazz greats – on whatever instrument. That included people like听Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Frank Sinatra, Mel Torm茅, Shirley Horn, Carmen McRae鈥.all the great singers. And besides my journey with the piano, I really fell in love with vocal jazz. I love the lyrics, the story, and I started to truly love accompanying singers and with my skills as a piano player, I found that I loved creating that bed of support, music, and sound underneath a singer. So in my early 20s, besides pushing a career as a solo artist and as a pianist in a trio, I started to frequently accompany singers. And to extend the answer to the question of how I got where I am today – when I would tour in my late 20s, I would do workshops at jazz clubs for anyone, but most of the people who would come to those workshops were singers who had questions about leading bands and directing bands and – not conducting – but really how to听lead their band onstage. So a lot of my work came from those workshops and came from singers wanting help from me. And I started to become this piano player who really started to听specialize in coaching singers, not in their voices and the singing, but in helping them work with bands and accompanists and lead their bands and be a great front person and put on exceptional shows. That is where my online course grew out of – it came from years of workshops and helping singers, which I still love to do today.

You鈥檝e toured in the U.S. and internationally, you’ve recorded multiple albums, you’ve won many awards. What accomplishment are you most proud of?

That’s a great question. I was a听finalist for three years in a row in Switzerland, in the Montreux International Solo Jazz piano competition. That鈥檚 something that I’m really proud of. I’m really proud of the fact that I’ve worked听15 years in New York City. Like, that’s a really cool thing, and I have achieved most of my goals here – and now I’m constantly making new goals the older I get.

I’m also really proud of the online video course I created.听It was filmed a couple of years ago and took a year to edit and create on the back end. And now it’s been selling for a couple of years and doing really well. So that’s a huge achievement to create something out of nothing and do that, and I think the last thing I’ll say is I鈥檓 ultra-proud and grateful for the community of friends I have around me. My community is huge now – it’s just ever-expanding and it鈥檚 a听beautiful community of people.听Most of them are artistic or musical in some respect, and they’re truly a great support.

What would your best advice be for a person maybe who doesn’t have a creative job or regular creative outlet and is looking to reconnect with that part of themselves? What would you tell them?

Well, at the minimum they need to connect with a friend in that world that can invite them to tag along to events with them, and then start enjoying the things that this friend enjoys. Maybe that snowballs into taking lessons or participating at events, playing their instrument at events. That would be ideal. But even better than a friend is to听get themselves a good mentor or a coach.听Someone who can say, “Okay, what is it that you want to do? What are your dreams, goals, and aspirations? Now let me actually work out methodically how I can make that happen for you. That鈥檚 something I鈥檓 really proud to offer to the community.

What can people expect from your jazz concert at on December 16?

Flyer Jazz Night Anita Rogers Gallery

Well, a really听wonderful evening of beautiful, great American songbook, and I’m going to just use the word jazz. Anita is really diving into the world of jazz with this concert. It’s with a really wonderful band in addition to myself and Anita – we have听Tony DePaolis听on double bass 补苍诲听Aaron Seeber听on the drums. It鈥檚 the same band that we had last May and Anita is going to be presenting a really beautiful show of some fast ones, some ballads, some classics, some newer ones, of a beautiful jazz repertoire, which is going to be a fantastic concert.

Rediscover the part of yourself that never stopped dreaming. A month of private artistic mentorship and musical immersion with acclaimed jazz pianist Matt Baker, designed to reawaken your creative spirit, connect you to world-class artistry, and rekindle the joy of music.

This week we’ve partnered with our sister company,听, to bring our BAHS clients and candidates information on and an invitation to the gallery’s upcoming exhibition featuring works by Mark Rothko and William Scott.

MARK ROTHKO and WILLIAM SCOTTContinuing the Dialogue

Anita Rogers Gallery听is thrilled to present听Mark Rothko and William Scott: Continuing the Dialogue, an exhibition of paintings and works on paper by two twentieth-century masters, offering new insight into their relationship and mutual admiration, influence, and respect. Large-scale works on canvas will be complemented by preparatory drawings, as well as correspondence between the two artists.

Mark Rothko听(1903-1970), one of the most prominent of the American abstract painters, 补苍诲听William Scott CBE, RA听(1913-1989), a leader in the Modernist movement in the UK, met in 1953 and consequently grew close through letters and visits. By including the artists鈥 works and words together, the gallery hopes to share the story of this friendship with a wider public.

Rothko and Scott first met through gallerist Martha Jackson in New York in 1953 and kept in contact through letters, sharing personal moments from their lives, as well as details on their artistic endeavors and topics then weighing on their minds. Both painters had roots in figurative painting and had moved into abstraction by the time they met, although Scott would return to and reference figuration throughout his long career. In the summer of 1959, the Rothko family stayed with the Scotts at their cottage in Somerset and here they discussed concerns over the issues of placing art in public places, as well as their mutual experiences as immigrants – Rothko, as a boy, had moved to the US from Latvia; Scott, after winning a scholarship to the Royal Academy Schools, had moved to England from Ireland.

It was also at the time of this meeting that both artists had embarked on commissions for murals: Scott鈥檚 was for the Altnagelvin Hospital in Ireland, the first National Health Service hospital ever to be built, and Rothko鈥檚 was a series of paintings for the Four Seasons Restaurant in New York.听 The luxury restaurant, set within Mies van der Rohe鈥檚 celebrated Seagram Building, was designed by Philip Johnson and catered to celebrities and the very wealthy.

The commissions presented new challenges, both physically, and artistically. Both were very different kinds of projects, for different purposes and different audiences, and this posed a great contradiction for Rothko who allegedly said, 鈥淚 hope to paint something that will ruin the appetite of every son of a bitch who ever eats in that room.鈥 The gallery will display preliminary paintings and drawings for both murals, offering a glimpse into their working processes.

For Scott, whose听听tackling a piece on this scale was a monumental task. However, he was emboldened by his exposure to Rothko, as well as to the other American abstract expressionist painters whose work he had first discovered in 1953. While these influences are certainly evident post-1953, they also convinced Scott that his origins were in Europe, in Matisse and Bonnard.听 He then very much made the commission his own through references to ancient Irish art, architecture, and symbolism.

Meanwhile, Rothko, accustomed to working on a larger scale, was faced with creating a site-specific project for the first time. Rothko struggled with the placement of the series in the luxury restaurant from the beginning and shortly after his return from Europe and following his conversation with Scott, Rothko finally withdrew from the contract, sharing the news with Scott in a letter dated 14 December 1959, on view in the exhibition. While Rothko revealed no hesitations whatsoever about the decision, he lamented to Scott that 鈥渢here really is no real place for them鈥 [the murals]. 听The paintings were offered to the Tate Gallery but initially turned down; afterwards, the paintings spent a handful of years in the artist鈥檚 studio. Scott was instrumental in making the work of Rothko known to other artists in the UK, specifically Patrick Heron, and in 1970, the Tate accepted the paintings into the collection, including the conditions for display set out by Rothko.听 Now the听, where they are on view to this day.

The exhibition will be on view April 26 鈥 June 3 at 494 Greenwich Street, Ground Floor in New York City. The gallery will host an opening reception on Wednesday, April 26, 6-8pm, as well as a gallery talk with Christopher Rothko, Kate Rothko Prizel, and James Scott on Tuesday, May 9, moderated by gallery owner Anita Rogers. In conjunction with the exhibition, the gallery will publish a full-color catalog featuring an essay by David Anfam, art historian and author of the catalogue raisonn茅听Mark听Rothko: The Works on Canvas, as well as writer听and curator of听Abstract Expressionism听(Royal Academy of Arts, London, 2016-17) – the largest survey of its kind ever held in Europe.

In 2019, the gallery hosted a major solo exhibition of 1950’s 鈥 1980’s paintings and drawings by William Scott. This will be the gallery鈥檚 first exhibition including works by Mark Rothko.

The gallery would like to thank the following for their assistance in putting this exhibition together: Christopher Rothko, Kate Rothko Prizel, Marion Kahan, James Scott, Robert and Lisa Scott, Purwita Susanta, and David Anfam, as well as the Scott archive, and the private collectors who have contributed to the exhibition.

Diwali Celebrations听

This year, Diwali runs November 2-6 with the actual day of Diwali falling on today, Thursday, November 4. We’ve gathered some of the best ways to teach children about the holiday and celebrate together this year.

Events in Your Area

罢丑别听听is hosting a series of events this week for children and their families, including crafts, storytelling, and performances. This Saturday, November 6, visit the听Chhandayan Center for Indian Music听for a joyous day of music, dance, and food. In Los Angeles, the trendy听听is offering a听special menu听for Diwali featuring small bites and unique seasonal flavors, including punjabi style pumpkin. Miami locals can unwind with yoga, homemade chai, and select foods with听.听听In London, book a table at Michelin starred听Gymkhana听to enjoy a special听听through November 7. The menu features multiple decadent courses, with optional wine pairings, ending with chocolate mawa cake, or our recommendation – the cardamom and basmati rice kheer with fresh figs.

Diwali Crafts & Books
This year, PBS put together a list of their听top听听– we love听听for younger children 补苍诲听Holidays Around the World: Celebrate Diwali : With Sweets, Lights, and Fireworks听for older readers. There are plenty of crafts for children of all ages to make to celebrate the festival of light, from lanterns to candle holders. Our favorites are the,听听,听simple salt dough candleholder,听, and this听.

搁别肠颈辫别蝉听
Traditionally, Diwali is a celebration filled with rich homemade foods and treats. While meals vary widely from region to region and family to family, most feasts highlight the seasonal produce available, along with plenty of Indian sweets. We recommend these听(children and adults will love them!),听,听, 补苍诲听. Throughout the celebration, indulge in听,听, or听(a great last-minute choice!).

Quick, Easy & Healthy Weeknight Recipes Kids and Adults Will Love

As the seasons change, our palettes and variety of seasonal produce do as well. This week, we’ve gathered some of our favorite cold-weather recipes that the whole family will love – and all are easy enough to make on a weeknight!

– The swap from red meat to turkey makes the dish a bit lighter and healthier but is still hearty and satisfying.

听–听Perfectly creamy, these mashed potatoes have a bright flavor that complements anything you serve with them.

– Children will love putting together and eating this fun dish. There are also endless variations – try adding shrimp, chicken, mushrooms, tomatoes, or even halved Brussels sprouts!

– Great for breakfast, lunch, or a side for dinner, this salad is quick and simple to make, and is filled with nutrients and fiber. Add a light vinaigrette and a handful of nuts or fresh herbs to make a more elevated version for the adults at the table.

听– These are a fun way to add vegetables to pizza night. Lay out a few toppings (don’t forget a good salami, a gourmet cheese, and maybe a spicy honey for adults) and let everyone in the family design their own.

– A quintessential fall recipe, this surprisingly easy recipe tastes rich and full of flavor but comes together in less than an hour.

Halloween is this weekend – for some, it will be a much-needed celebration after skipping last year’s festivities. Others may not yet feel safe gathering in groups and prefer to stay home and enjoy the holiday with family. Still others have had a busy start to the fall season and haven’t had a chance to think about Halloween plans. However you’d like to spend this weekend, we’ve gathered a selection of fun recipes, last-minute crafts, delicious cocktails and spooky events with a few tickets left – there is sure to be something on the list to keep the everyone in the family entertained.听Happy Halloween!

Halloween & Autumn Crafts
Crafts make great last minute holiday activities – whether your child will be celebrating with friends this weekend or staying home, add some simple October fun to the celebration using items you likely already have around the house. Using just pinecones, stick-on eyes, and pipe cleaners, children can make听听(and a variety of other monsters if they choose!) to play with or decorate the Halloween table. Other easy crafts for younger children include a听听,听,听toilet paper roll ghouls, 补苍诲听. Looking for last minute Halloween decorations? Get the whole family involved in cutting and folding paper bats and you’ll have a听in less than an hour! For a more elaborate project (and one you can eat later!), try听a听; use the instructions as a starting point then get creative with pumpkins, ghosts, tombstones and more!

Spooky Recipes
For a fun at-home Halloween with children, there are plenty of spooky and easy to make recipes out there. Some of our favorites are听,听,听听补苍诲听.听For even more, check out this list of听. For adults (or adventurous children!), we love听听– the striking black noodles shine in a simple sauce or add olives or sun-dried tomatoes for a spooky (and delicious) mix-in. Follow the main course with a听,听, or听.

Curious Cocktails
Whether you’re hosting a spooky celebration or having a quiet night in, we’ve compiled some of our favorite Halloween cocktails. For a classic crowd pleaser, we love听classic听; not only is it delicious but your home will smell amazing while it simmers. To make it friendly to non-drinkers as well, consider setting it up as a ‘hot apple cider bar’ – serve the warm cider without alcohol then offer a selection of bourbons and other alcohol, as well as seasonal garnishes, like cinnamon sticks, apple slices, and cranberries. For a lighter cocktail that still feels festive, try the听. We also love the bright green听听featuring absinthe and champagne.

Grown-Up Celebrations
If you’re looking for an elevated Halloween celebration outside the home, there are still tickets available to certain celebrations. In New York City, buy tickets to a听, featuring classics as well as Halloween favorites (such as Michael Jackson’s听Thriller听and several songs by Danny Elfman). In Los Angeles,听to see Jordan Peele’s popular thriller听Get Out听screened alongside a live orchestra playing the score, led by composer Michael Abels. Sunday night, the Banc of California Stadium is hosting a special event featuring a screening of听听film, alongside live performances by Danny Elfman and Bille Eilish, and several other special guests. In Miami, consider attending听听on Jungle Island; the spooky candlelit event featuring a string quartet, as well as food and beverages. In London, head out for a scary movie screening – at听, choose from screenings of听Scream, Rocky Horror Picture Show, Hocus Pocus,听and more. Holly鈥檚 mission is to fight against the climbing obesity rates in America by encouraging people of all ages to start with small steps towards a healthy life.

Holly is the owner of听听in San Mateo, CA where she and her team of trainers teach her signature听听in person and online.

In 2014, Holly created听,听a non-profit after-school program, for 37 Fairfax High school students in Los Angeles, CA. The focus of the program is to motivate and inspire inner-city, low-income teens to eat healthily and create a career path for each girl. Girl Fit is catered towards girls ages 13-18 where girls learn goal-setting skills and how to live a confident and healthy life. Workouts are catered towards teamwork and focused on well-being instead of weight loss. Holly鈥檚 goal is to provide the tools for girls from low-income families to succeed in all areas of their lives while ensuring they have access to healthy foods and the knowledge to make the best food choices.

In 2020, Holly created,听,听an organic, plant-based, meal delivery service saving professionals time by curating every meal designed for weight loss. Renew meals are delivered nationwide. In her free time, she loves running up hills in San Francisco and going on walks with her two Pomeranians and husband Johnathan.

Holly, you鈥檝e achieved so much at such a young age. You are a highly successful woman in the fitness industry with a huge following. Do you have a plan to return immediately to work or are you considering having some time off?

I am so excited to have 百花视频 here to help me with my return to work! I am very picky about childcare needs as I have a team of employees to manage and 2 locations. I am only going to be able to take about 2 months off.

Congratulations on your baby news! What鈥檚 been the most challenging part of your pregnancy?

I had severe morning sickness for 3 months which made it very hard to work and do my daily activities. I tried to focus on how grateful I am versus feeling sorry for myself or focusing on the nausea. This was no easy task!

So many women feel pressure to snap back into shape after giving birth. What would be your advice?

Take your time to lose the desired weight you want, crash dieting and starving yourself doesn鈥檛 work. The slower you lose the weight the better chance you will have for fitness to become a lifestyle. You will lose the weight you gained during pregnancy if you eat a balanced diet and have a plan to reach your fitness goals. Be patient and make sure to train 3-4 days a week for the best results!

Many new mothers depend on newborn care and live-in nannies after their special arrival. Will you be adding a nanny to the mix to help you maintain and continue your workload in order to be both a successful woman at work and mother at home?

Having a nanny is essential to my happiness, my family’s happiness, and running a company. I wouldn鈥檛 be able to do what I love without the help of a nanny. I鈥檓 excited to learn from my nanny as I don鈥檛 have much experience with babies.

With nutrition being such a pivotal part of healthy living, has there been anything your pregnancy has hindered or changed with your usual food habits?

I鈥檓 not used to eating more than 3 times a day and being pregnant has made it very difficult to adjust to the recommended 4-6 small meals a day! Feeling hungry all the time and searching for fresh, protein-packed snacks is a challenge when you鈥檙e on the go. My family is Italian-American and traditionally Italians don鈥檛 snack. We never grew up having snacks in the house, we really develop our eating habits at a young age. I鈥檓 mainly snacking on apples and peanut butter, mini frittatas, and homemade protein bites.

Which high profile mothers in the public eye do you find inspiring and why?

I love the Olympic gymnast, Shawn Johnson. She has so much fun during her pregnancy, she is a joy to follow on Instagram. Her and her husband are always having the best time together and making the best out of an uncomfortable situation! They even did an underwater photoshoot in formal wear! I鈥檇 love to hang out with her for a day.

What app are you鈥檙e using right now that鈥檚 enjoyable and helpful?

My favorite app is the听. It tells you how big your baby is each week and gives you tips on how to deal with specific symptoms based on your week.

How can we lose some of our baby weight when pressed for time stuck at home?

A quick 20 minutes a day, with the proper moves will create a drastic difference in your body.听Start with free weights or resistance bands and do full body moves that help reduce body fat and burn more calories than cardio. You can also take one of our online private or semi-private workouts ().听Keep in mind to lose weight, reach 10k steps per day, which can be done on a treadmill at home or walking with your little peanut in your stroller.

How many minutes is recommended as a daily workout when pregnant?

You should aim for 30 minutes of moderate intensity aerobic training 3-4 days a week per the recommendation of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Which is better, cardio or strength training?

Both types of training are beneficial, however, strength training and cardio combined are the magic formula to reduce body fat. Strength training burns more fat than cardio, and will provide a cardiovascular workout if HIIT is incorporated.

Is it safe to work out with a mask on?

It is completely safe to wear a mask while working out, you can wear a sweat wicking mask to help reduce discomfort. , lightweight and sweat resistant.

What should I eat before and after a workout?

The best thing to eat before a workout is a small meal containing protein and carbohydrates up to 45 minutes before your session. A piece of bread with peanut butter, hummus and crackers, greek yogurt and granola would all be excellent options. After a workout, aim for an item with protein and healthy fats like a sandwich, wrap, or even a sweet potato.

Do I need running shoes AND strength training shoes?

Running shoes are designed to provide proper support for your feet while they are hitting the ground at a fast pace. Running shoes add stability and cushion to your feet and joints, with this, it becomes difficult to strength train in them as they are usually bulkier. The bulk of the running shoe is not needed for strength training, and could cause injury while moving through your strength workouts. Both are equally important to invest in. For best results, a running store can do a gait analysis to help you choose the best option for your stride and gait.

Green juice VS eating veggies?

Juicing strips the fiber from your veggies, which is a key benefit to eating vegetables. It鈥檚 much听more beneficial to eat whole vegetables rather than juice them. Fiber helps us stay full for a longer period of time and also helps digestion.

Is it better to work out during the day or night?

The best workout is the workout you actually do. Check out听听where I break听down the benefits of each!听As long as you get a workout in at some point during the day, you are doing awesome!

Tell us about a podcast that鈥檚 making a difference to your life right now鈥

My favorite podcast is the听听podcast. He interviews CEOs and entrepreneurs who have the best stories behind their success. Tony is one of the most interesting people on the planet and always encourages people to focus on maintaining a peak state where nothing can bother you. This can help get anyone through the emotions that come with pregnancy. Focus on how grateful you are to be pregnant instead of digging into a spiral of negative emotions.

What brought you to 百花视频 and why did you choose them for their childcare service?

As a busy business owner, I wanted to find someone who could match me with the best possible nanny rather than digging through unqualified applicants myself.听I’ve seen so many nannies听on the sidewalks while I run, all of whom are on their phones while walking, not paying attention听to their surroundings. You want to be shrewd in who you hire, as having the right staff who is properly trained is a priority with a child.

Whether you’re planning for Memorial Day Weekend next month or just looking to get out of town for the weekend, we’ve compiled our list of top quick getaway destinations that make the most of the warmer weather.

Catalina Island, California听

Take the 1-hour high speed ferry from California’s Long Beach, San Pedro, Dana Point, or Newport Beach to visit the听picturesque听car-free (golf carts are very common!) island of Catalina.听听also offers chartered flights to Catalina in under 20 minutes or any private plane of your choice can fly into Catalina鈥檚听Airport听in the Sky. Book a room at the historic听 (the property will be 100 years old this year); the concierge will pick guests up from the ferry or airport and back to the property, the island’s only听Forbes 4-Star hotel. All rooms feature stunning ocean views, breakfast, lunch and cocktail hour; many boast patios and indoor fireplaces. Spend your time on the island playing golf, fishing, swimming, touring on a glass-bottom boat, or simply enjoying good food and taking in the views.

Big Sur, California听

Just a two-and-a-half-hour drive from San Francisco or a 70-minute flight from Los Angeles, Big Sur is great choice for families looking to enjoy everything nature has to offer, including spectacular views, unmatched hikes, beaches, state parks, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, and more. We love the听听– the hotel just might offer some of the most incredible views in the country. Choose from ocean or mountain view suites, featuring private gardens, patios with dramatic views, soaking tubs, fireplaces and more. Note that the hotel is open to adults only. If you’re traveling with children, consider听, a lovely, historic hotel less than an hour from Big Sur and in the heart of Carmel-by-the-Sea.

Boca Raton, Florida听

Less than an hour drive from Miami and under a three-hour flight from New York City, Boca Raton can feel like a world away. Book a room at the stunning听听(a Waldorf Astoria Resort) to enjoy golf, tennis, surf lessons, a private beach, 356 lush acres, and three waterfront pools. Children will love the听nearby听, the largest butterfly park in the world听(about a 25-minute drive from the resort); the park features听over 20,000 butterflies, as well as tropical flowers, plants and a听selection of colorful birds soaring overhead.听Adults and older children may enjoy a visit to the听 – be sure to check the calendar frequently as they often offer free admission on special holidays, such as Earth Day and Father’s Day.

Palm Beach, Florida 听

Drive a little over an hour from Miami to reach Palm Beach, also a quick three-hour flight from New York City. We love听, a 125-year-old Italian Renaissance style property offering multiple restaurants, golf, tennis, swimming, and an easy walk to the听. Adventurous children may enjoy a visit to the听nearby听; the non-profit features 20 cats of nine different species, including leopards, jaguars and cheetahs. Daily tours of various lengths and themes are offered.

Watch Hill, Rhode Island

While we do love Newport, this year we are choosing Watch Hill, a beautiful coastal town about half an hour closer to New York City than Newport. Once home to Clark Gable, Henry Ford and even Taylor Swift, the historic town offers an array of small art galleries,听antique stores, boutiques and caf茅s. We love the听; the hotel offers a 650-foot private white-sand beach, a putting green, croquet lawn, and a shuffle board court. Check the resort calendar to choose from a range of activities, including movie screenings, yoga and cooking classes, evenings around the fire pit and live music.

Lenox, Massachusetts听

Just under a 3-hour drive from New York City and 2 hours from Boston is the town of Lenox, Massachusetts in the Berkshires. Visit author听,听, 补苍诲听. We recommend booking a room at the听听(formerly known as Cranwell); the elegant听11-room Tudor-style mansion sits on top of a hill with beautiful views, a golf course, spa, and two excellent restaurants.

Bath, United Kingdom听

In just over an hour, you can escape London and find yourself in the historic city of Bath. We love听 (open now for dining and day visits, opens for overnight stays in mid-May); the stunning ivy-covered hotel features sprawling English gardens, multiple pools, Roman baths, and the U.K.’s only听听L’Occitane spa.

Thornbury Castle, United Kingdom

Reopening May 17,听 is a truly one of a kind destination. Located under 3 hours from London in Gloucestershire, the property takes guests back to the 1500s in a historic English castle once owned by听Henry VIII. Stay in a luxurious room with a 4-poster bed, tapestries and fireplace; explore the grounds and try听croquet, archery or falconry. The castle welcomes children over 8-years old.

Spring may have just started but it isn’t too soon to start thinking about summer plans for your children. Many in-person summer camps are reopening this summer and deadlines to sign up are quickly approaching. We anticipate that many of the top choices will fill up early as most have limited capacity and increased demand this year. Before making any summer decisions, be sure to consider what Covid-19 precautions the camps are taking, the health status of your family members and others you regularly see, and your child’s comfort level with attending in-person or virtual camps this summer.

In-Person Camps

If your family is ready to return to in-person activities this summer, we’ve gathered some of our favorite options for sports, creative, and educational camps. All share several Covid-19 precautions they will enforce but we recommend reaching out directly to your camp of choice with any concerns or questions. A good staff will be happy to discuss their plans to keep all campers safe, healthy, and having fun while in their care.

New York听

: For ages 3-5, Camp K’Ton Ton offers half to full day programs with a wide variety of activities, including music, movement, gymnastics, sports, games and science. With three outdoor play spaces and two outdoor swimming pools (led by Red Cross-certified instructors), this is a fun and safe option for NYC children.

: For creative campers ages 3-11, consider this art focused camp hosted at Trevor Day School’s East Campus on the Upper East Side. Here, children will learn about plants and vegetables in the patio garden, participate in farm-to-table cooking lessons and do daily art projects. This year, the program has partnered with Mad Science to bring engaging science activities to the older campers, as well.

听offers various options for children in grades Pre-K through 6. We love the Sports Camp for grades 1-6; the camp offers daily swimming, a huge variety of other sports, plus an emphasis on nutritional education. The camp also offers a daily elective – children can choose from a range of activities, including chess and drawing.

Los Angeles

: Children ages 6-14 will love this STEM based camp. With a variety of topics, including robotics, game design, YouTube video production, digital art, coding, 3-D printing and more, there is sure to be something for every curious child.

: For campers seeking outdoor adventure, we love this camp for ages 3 to 15 hosted on over 21 acres in Old Topanga Canyon. Children can choose from a seemingly endless array of activities, including rock climbing, gymnastics, go-karts, swimming, horseback riding and martial arts.

Miami

: The Frost Museum is hosting weekly themed camps for grades Pre-K- 5. Themes include paleontology, marine biology, the solar system and engineering.

: Miami’s number one culinary camp for kids teaches nutrition, cooking fundamentals, cupcake decorating, international cuisine and more to ages 5 through 16.

: This creative camp focuses on music, color, timbre, texture, and culture. Activities range from tie-dying T-shirts to making musical instruments. Choose from a 6-week camp exploring a different part of the world each week or shorter craft-focused options for younger campers.

The Hamptons

: Led by leading contemporary artists, including Virva Hinnemo, this Sag Harbor camp offers a new art activity every day, including drawing, painting, printmaking, mask making, beading, pottery, sculpture, sewing, and collage.

: With options for ages 2-12, this lovely outdoor-focused camp in Bridgehampton encourages imaginative, open ended play.

: Children ages 4 through 14 will love to spend time outdoors practicing their swing at this daily camp in Water Mill. The program offers various scheduling options, including weekly and daily rates.

London听

: With age-appropriate camps for kids 3 through 16, this camp offers a huge variety of activities. Our favorites include Bee Bot Basic Robot Coding for the youngest campers, Aqua Olympics and Movie Making Basics.

Virtual Camps听

: This kitchen offers a live 2-hour cooking class every day for ages 6 through 15. All recipes are vegetarian and many can be adjusted to be gluten-free, dairy-free or egg-free. Certain cities (New York, Palo Alto and more) offer in-person options as well.

: For older children (grades 9 and up), consider this crash course in finances. The camp includes course options on budgeting, financing, investing and cryptocurrency.

: Choose from two sessions – the first focuses on interior design, fashion, and marketing, while the second is a photography intensive in partnership with Leica Cameras.

: In addition to the traditional in-person program this year, the famed Michigan center for the arts will offer 3-week virtual summer camps for children in grades 2-12. Children can choose between various live classes in music, visual arts, creative writing, dance, filmmaking, theatre, and interdisciplinary arts.

After a particularly long and strange winter, most of us are ready to embrace spring. It finally feels like a new season has begun – April is upon us, as are Easter and Passover. To welcome spring, the team here at 百花视频 has put together a list of ways to make the most of the season, including Easter and Passover celebration ideas, as well as outdoor activities to enjoy with children.

Passover for Kids

The week of Passover can be difficult for many children, especially picky eaters who are missing some of their favorite foods. We suggest trying one of these Passover-approved, kid-friendly recipes this week:

: Get the whole family involved in making matzo (and click here to read Time Magazine’s 听ahead of time.)

: Host a family Passover pizza party this week!

: For those missing pasta this week, try this healthy and delicious alternative.

: Great for children and adults, we suggest eating plain as chicken fingers, adding sauce and making chicken parmesan, or serving with roasted vegetables! For kosher chicken breasts, we recommend 听– they have听next day delivery in most听areas for whole kosher chickens, breasts, thighs and wings.

While it’s too late to sign up for the Passover box, we do recommend looking into听 – each box comes complete with recipes, crafts and decorations for the whole family. Sign up soon to receive the听Lag Ba鈥橭mer box!

Easter Sunday

Kid-Friendly Crafts and Recipes

Celebrate Easter this weekend with a wide variety of fun crafts for children. We love these听听(made with a small hand or dish towel) 补苍诲听听for school age children. Click here for a听听for all ages.

For a sweet treat, try making these听听or our favorite听.

If your family is dying eggs this year and interested in exploring听more than the typical egg dyes found in the grocery store, consider making your own听 using kitchen scraps. Red cabbage, onion skins, turmeric and more can all be turned into vibrant, natural dyes. It’s a great afternoon project for curious children to celebrate Easter while also learning about reducing kitchen waste.

For the Adults听

Once the kids are finished enjoying their Easter candy and off to bed, mix up听(we recommend the Elderflower & Herb Cooler)听补苍诲听听with roasted vegetables. If you haven’t secured your Easter lamb yet,听 offers next day delivery of reasonably priced grass-fed meat, poultry and seafood to most of the U.S., as well as frozen prepared foods.

Celebrate Spring

Pick Your Own, Grow Your Own听

For much of the American听East Coast and the United Kingdom, it’s too early for pick your own produce.听However, those in the warmer U.S. states can start now. In Los Angeles, visit nearby听, which offers an impressive array of pick your own options, including carrots,听arugula, English peas,听lemons, and beginning April 2,听strawberries. In Miami, visit听听to pick your own strawberries or visit听听for exotic fruits, including guava and lychee.

For those in colder regions, it may be time to start planning for听spring听and summer vegetables. A small indoor or outdoor garden is a great family project that children can enjoy all summer. Gardening enforces a听range of听skills from a better understanding of听science to听patience, resilience, and creativity.听听补苍诲听. For those without outdoor access, try a kid-friendly听; using grow lights and an easy planting system, children can cultivate herbs, vegetables and flowers anywhere in the home.

Botanical Gardens听

Many cities have Botanical Gardens and now is the perfect time to explore the budding flowers and plants. Make sure to check the website of your closest garden ahead of time; many, including听, require guests to register听for a time slot听in order to听manage crowds.听Many gardens听host special events this time of year. The South Coast Botanic Garden in听Palos Verdes, California is revealing a special tropical butterfly event beginning April 1;听听allows visitors to learn about and observe the butterflies at every stage of their life cycle through听indoor and outdoor exhibitions. Finally,听 has a wonderful site set up for children with activities, recipes and virtual workshops open to virtual visitors from all over the world.

Play听

Experts agree that creative play is critical to children’s development () and playing outdoors in the fresh air is even better.听, a book we’ve mentioned in previous newsletters, is a wonderful choice for creative, simple outdoor games. We also love听,听,听补苍诲听, each with a different outdoor activity prompt to inspire children’s imaginations.
