What to Know About Being a Celebrity Nanny

Working as a celebrity nanny is often described as a 鈥渄ream role,鈥 offering high salaries, luxurious perks, and the opportunity to travel the world. But behind the glitz and glam, this career path requires a very specific skill set, mindset, and level of discretion. Celebrity nannies operate in a world where privacy is paramount, flexibility is essential, and excellence is expected every single day. Before pursuing a role in a high-profile household, it鈥檚 important to understand both the reality and the responsibility that come with it.

Celebrity families often have unpredictable schedules, from last-minute travel to late-night filming or event commitments. As a nanny, this means your routine might not be traditional, and adaptability quickly becomes one of your most valuable assets. These families depend on their nannies not only for high-quality childcare but also for maintaining stability and normalcy for their children amid a fast-paced lifestyle.

You might find yourself working alongside security teams, private chefs, and household managers, becoming part of a finely tuned team. Confidentiality, emotional intelligence, and professionalism are key traits that separate successful celebrity nannies from the rest.

Pros & Cons of Being a Celebrity Nanny

Pros:

鈥⒙Competitive Pay & Perks:聽Compensation is often well above industry average, with benefits like travel, accommodations, and bonuses.
鈥⒙Access to Exclusive Experiences:聽From private jets to international adventures, you鈥檒l see the world through a very unique lens.
鈥⒙Professional Growth:聽Working in a high-standard environment often refines your skill set, discipline, and adaptability.
鈥⒙Deep Bonds:聽Many celebrity nannies form close, long-term relationships with the children and families they serve.

Cons:

鈥⒙Lack of Work-Life Balance:聽Long hours and changing schedules can make it hard to maintain personal time.
鈥⒙Privacy Pressure:聽You must be trustworthy and tight-lipped; confidentiality agreements are standard and nonnegotiable.
鈥⒙High Expectations:聽The standard of care is exceptional, and mistakes or unprofessional behavior can end a contract quickly.
鈥⒙Constant Adaptation:聽Flexibility isn鈥檛 optional; travel, relocations, and schedule shifts are part of the job.

Five Important Tips for Working as a Celebrity Nanny

1. Protect Your Professional Reputation:

Discretion is everything. Never discuss the family publicly or share photos online. Word travels fast in this industry, and your integrity will become your strongest referral tool.

2. Stay Grounded and Graceful:

The environment may be glamorous, but your role is rooted in childcare and emotional support. Stay humble, reliable, and focused on the children鈥檚 well-being rather than the lifestyle surrounding them.

3. Maintain Flexibility and Readiness:

A celebrity nanny鈥檚 schedule may change overnight. Keep travel bags prepared, passports up to date, and your mindset open. Families value nannies who can pivot without stress or complaint.

4. Invest in Your Professional Development:

Continued education鈥攕uch as newborn care certifications, emotional intelligence training, or safety and travel readiness鈥攃an set you apart. The more skilled and confident you are, the more indispensable you become.

5. Be an Educator at Heart:

Many celebrity children travel extensively and may not attend traditional schools during their early years. A top-tier nanny knows how to blend care with education, creating age-appropriate lesson plans, introducing early literacy and STEM concepts, and making learning fun and flexible across time zones. The ability to nurture a child鈥檚 curiosity and keep them academically engaged while on the move is one of the most valued skills in this field.

Six Ways to Define and Maintain Professional Boundaries in a Family鈥檚 Home

Working in a family鈥檚 home is a unique experience and very different than working in an office; however, professionalism and boundaries still apply, and when utilized properly, lead to improved communication, stronger working relationships, and a better overall environment for families and employees. Claire Master, a nanny and house manager with years of experience, shares her top tips for maintaining professional boundaries within the home setting.

1. Start with a Strong Contract

Before beginning a position, set yourself up for success by clearly defining expectations鈥攐n both sides. A thoughtful contract helps everyone feel comfortable and supported from day one. Include job responsibilities, work hours, benefits, communication preferences, and even a code of conduct for both nanny and parents. Regular check-ins or annual reviews can also help keep conversations open and prevent small issues from turning into big misunderstandings.

2. Set Daily Intentions and Structure

Walking into work with a plan not only keeps the day running smoothly but also gives you confidence. Whether it鈥檚 a schedule of activities, a to-do list, or a routine for the children, structure brings a sense of purpose and professionalism to the day. It also shows the family that you take your role seriously while creating a safe and predictable environment for the kids.

3. Uphold Professional Standards

Professionalism isn鈥檛 just about big moments鈥攊t shines through in the small, everyday details. Dressing appropriately, respecting the family鈥檚 privacy and work-from-home space, and staying attentive to their household culture all help you align with expectations while showing respect for the home you work in.

4. Protect Confidentiality

Families trust us with their children and their private lives. Honor that trust by keeping what you see and hear inside the home confidential. Avoid posting about your job on social media or discussing personal family matters publicly. If you ever need advice or a listening ear, turn to a mentor or professional who will respect the family鈥檚 privacy while offering constructive guidance.

5. Avoid Oversharing

It鈥檚 easy to grow close to the parents you work for, but sharing too much about your personal life can blur the lines. Keep conversations friendly yet professional, sharing only what feels appropriate and comfortable for both sides. This balance helps maintain a sense of trust and ensures your role remains focused on caring for the children.

6. Leave Work at Work

When the day ends, give yourself permission to let go of work challenges so you can recharge. If you find yourself carrying worries home often, it may be time for a thoughtful conversation with the parents or to seek support from someone who can help you navigate the situation. Setting this boundary protects your well-being and allows you to return each day refreshed and ready to give your best.

Setting professional boundaries as a nanny isn鈥檛 always simple- it takes courage, clear communication, and sometimes a little trial and error. But when you start with a strong foundation and give yourself grace along the way, it becomes much easier to protect your own well-being while creating a healthy, respectful partnership with the families you work with.

In the end, these boundaries don鈥檛 just help you succeed- they help families feel confident knowing their home and children are in the hands of someone who is professional, caring, and fully present.

Working as a nanny can be incredibly rewarding- but it can also feel lonely at times. Building a community of other nannies can make all the difference. Whether you鈥檙e looking for advice, emotional support, or simply connection with people who understand your day-to-day life, a strong network can enhance both your professional and personal well-being. Below, we explore the key benefits of being part of a nanny community.

Professional Growth and Job Support

Nannies often work in isolated environments, without close support from others who understand their job. Having a network of nannies to reach out to can help with logistical support (anything from potty-training tips to the best new Montessori toys!), as well as professional guidance. Nannies who have more experience – or just a wealth of different experiences – are often the best people to advise you on how to have difficult conversations with employers, what the norms are surrounding benefits or paid time off, or how to set boundaries at work.聽A strong support network can lead to higher overall job satisfaction and longevity, and lower chances of burnout.

Emotional Support

Childcare can be one of the most rewarding professions, but it can also be emotionally and physically exhausting at times.聽Sometimes, even the best nannies just need to vent (appropriately, of course!) to someone who truly understands.聽Other times, you might need to hear another perspective on a difficult situation from someone in the industry.聽It鈥檚 just as rewarding for nannies to bond over the fun and share聽nanny聽memes as it is to support one another through children鈥檚 tough phases and job transitions.

Future Job Opportunities

驰辞耻谤听nanny聽community can introduce you to resources you may not have been aware of. The next time you鈥檙e job searching, chat with other nannies; they might introduce you to the agency that placed them, or know that one of their employer鈥檚 friends is looking for a聽nanny.

Advocacy and Empowerment

Being part of a聽nanny聽community helps you stay informed about your rights, as well as competitive rates and benefits in your area. Knowledge is power. If you aren鈥檛 sure if you鈥檙e being treated or paid fairly, often speaking to others and educating yourself are the first steps in聽building聽the confidence to advocate for yourself.

Long-lasting Friendship

Bonding over a shared passion and profession can be the foundation for deep and lasting friendships.

We would like to thank every nanny who has dedicated their life to the betterment of children. You make the world a better place. Thank you.

Q&A with Hilary Adler, Nature Based Educator

We have a unique opportunity to make life changing connections with the children in our care. We can make a difference. What鈥檚 more meaningful than that?!

What does being a nanny mean to you, and what makes this work meaningful?

Being a nanny is a chance to make a positive life long impact. Whether it is helping a child build their self confidence, find their niche, or their voice. We have a unique opportunity to make life changing connections with the children in our care. We can make a difference. What鈥檚 more meaningful than that?!

Hilary Adler

What are some ways you keep yourself up to date with child development or other skill sets?

Childcare is ever evolving and as professional Nannies we should be as well. I truly believe we are never done learning. I try to take a few courses and gain new certifications every year. Another way to see what鈥檚 new in our field and learn from others in the industry is attending your local International Nanny Training Day. I鈥檝e enjoyed going to this event as both an attendee and as speaker.

How has your role as a nanny changed over the years?

My role as a nanny has taken many forms. I have been a traditional M-F nanny, travel nanny, NCS, family assistant, and currently I am a Rota nanny. I have truly worked with all ages. From a few days old to those awkward teen years. That鈥檚 one of the reasons I love being a nanny. You have聽endless opportunities to change and grow聽alongside your career.

Q&A with Tina Barnes, Maryland Nanny

It鈥檚 meaningful work because nannies provide not just care, but a foundation of love, learning, and confidence that stays with children for life.

What does being a nanny mean to you, and what makes this work meaningful?

Being a nanny means having the privilege of shaping a child鈥檚 earliest experiences, it鈥檚 more than building blocks and finger painting- its teaching problem solving, fostering creativity and challenging kids to discover who they are. It鈥檚 meaningful work because nannies provide not just care, but a foundation of love, learning, and confidence that stays with children for life.

Tina Barnes

How do you build strong relationships with the children and families you work with?

Life as a nanny means showing up as your most authentic self because of how deeply personal the job is-you become part of a family and they become part of you. I believe nannies have such a wealth of both knowledge and love to give. Kids are engaged when you take an interest in what they are interested in. They鈥檙e also curious- so sharing your passions and introducing them to new experiences and ideas is essential. Building trust through open communication with parents, ensuring we work together as a united team is vital in creating consistency, security, and an environment where children can truly thrive.

How has your role as a nanny changed over the years?

My role as a nanny has evolved alongside the children I care for and from family to family. Over the years my role has shifted from meeting their basic needs, building routines, and nurturing their sense of safety and trust to fostering independence, supporting academic development, and encouraging social-emotional growth. The joy of long-term roles is getting to experience all these moments year to year from first days of preschool to senior prom. Life as a nanny during COVID was such a life-changing experience. Balancing limited social interaction, and new safety routines while still keeping the days engaging and comforting, as well as navigating remote learning for school aged kids deepened my adaptability and reinforced the importance of being both consistent and innovative in my care.

Katie Beck

What鈥檚 one misconception people often have about your work?

I think people tend to place nannies into one single category. Every single nanny family is different with varying personalities, careers and dynamics.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out as a nanny or thinking about entering the field?

Children should be your passion.聽Be reliable and consistent and fun! Be flexible and learn how to read a room. See a need, fill a need and you will be totally fulfilled and successful!

How has your role as a nanny changed over the years?

My career has evolved over the last decade from helping working parents make their lives run as smoothly as possible and take care of their children. Over time I have had other positions including being a tour nanny for a celebrity family and now I help manage homes and nanny for the rich and famous. I have cared f辞谤听neurodivergent聽kiddos, 4 sets of twins and flown private. I am thankful for where my career has taken me and look forward to the future!

Q&A with Sonya Kumar, British Nanny, Maternity Nurse, Governess and Sleep Trainer

It鈥檚 disheartening to see how nannies are often perceived as uneducated individuals with an easy job, leading to mistreatment and a lack of respect. This stereotype overlooks the significant impact nannies have on children’s lives. In reality, they play a crucial role in shaping young minds, preparing them for the real world, and instilling essential life skills, manners, and etiquette.

What advice do you have for new nannies?

As you prepare to start your journey in nannying, here are some essential insights to keep in mind:

1. Understand the Role:聽Take the time to fully grasp what being a nanny entails. Ensure you’re comfortable with the responsibilities and can meet the family’s needs, including understanding the compensation package and expectations.

2. Be Adaptable:聽Every family is unique, so flexibility is crucial. Embrace the differences and be willing to adjust your approach to fit their specific dynamics.

3. Avoid Stubbornness:聽Recognise the distinction between offering advice and being controlling. It’s important to provide suggestions without overstepping boundaries.

4. Support Parental Involvement:聽If the parents express a desire to be actively involved, be open to their presence. Establishing a collaborative relationship can benefit everyone, especially the children.

5. Offer Gentle Guidance:聽Instead of telling parents how to raise their children, offer options and advice in a gentle manner. This fosters a respectful partnership.

6. Don鈥檛 Compete with Parents:聽Remember that you can never replace a parent. Focus on being a fun and caring presence in the child’s life, someone they can trust and enjoy spending time with.

By keeping these principles in mind, you’ll create a positive environment for both the children and the family you work with.

What are some ways you keep yourself up to date with child development or other skills?

Staying informed about child development and enhancing your skills can be effectively achieved through social media and online communities. Facebook hosts numerous groups where nannies and experts share valuable advice and experiences. Additionally, LinkedIn is an excellent platform for connecting with like-minded professionals; many private household staff members use it to network and exchange insights. There are also various social media channels featuring individuals who generously share their expertise. Furthermore, there are many apps available, often with affordable subscriptions or even free options, providing an incredible wealth of information and advice. Consider enrolling in courses that provide the latest information and guidelines鈥攖hese can be both informative and enjoyable!

How do you think society views nannies, and what would you like to change about that perception?

Sonya Kumar

It鈥檚 disheartening to see how nannies are often perceived as uneducated individuals with an easy job, leading to mistreatment and a lack of respect. This stereotype overlooks the significant impact nannies have on children’s lives. In reality, they play a crucial role in shaping young minds, preparing them for the real world, and instilling essential life skills, manners, and etiquette. I am a Cambridge university graduate, many Nannies have outstanding academic achievements and decided to use their knowledge to help further shape the children of the future.

Nannies are not just caregivers; they are educators, mentors, and emotional support figures for children. Their work is instrumental in helping children navigate social interactions, develop confidence, and feel secure in their environment. This nurturing role is anything but easy and requires a wealth of knowledge, patience, and skill.

Moreover, nannies can earn substantial salaries, with some reaching six figures, reflecting the value they bring to families. It鈥檚 essential to recognize and appreciate the hard work and dedication that nannies invest in their roles. They are molding the future by fostering happy, healthy, and well-rounded individuals who will thrive in society.

Instead of viewing nannies as lesser professionals, we should honour their contributions and recognise the vital part they play in the lives of the children they care for.

Q&A with Milan Puga, Career Nanny & Educator

I foster developmental growth, encourage curiosity, and support reaching milestones. It鈥檚 all about creating a safe, nurturing, and enriching environment where children can truly learn, thrive and feel loved along the way.

What鈥檚 one misconception people often have about your work?

A common misconception about my job as a career nanny, is that nannies are just babysitters who only 鈥榳atch鈥 kids. In reality, my role goes far beyond supervision and ensuring they鈥檙e safe. With 10 years of experience working with children and degrees in early childhood education and child development, I bring an intentional, educational approach to my childcare. I foster developmental growth, encourage curiosity, and support reaching milestones. It鈥檚 all about creating a safe, nurturing, and enriching environment where children can truly learn, thrive and feel loved along the way. Choosing to be a career Nanny has been one of the decisions I made in my life.

Milan Puga

What鈥檚 the most heartwarming thing a child has ever said or done for you?

It definitely has to be when they randomly tell me 鈥淚 love you鈥 accompanied by a hug or just saying it while we鈥檙e in the car or playing. Truly the best feeling.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out as a nanny or thinking about entering the field?

My advice would be that if you鈥檙e thinking about it, do it. The more experience you have behind you, the better. References are everything so when hired, whether it鈥檚 Babysitting or your first Nanny job, it鈥檚 important that you do your best job so that parents have wonderful things to share about you when wanting to move up in the Nanny ladder. Also, don鈥檛 be afraid to network and put yourself out there. Make a flyer for yourself advertising your services and post them in local Facebook groups, work with agencies once you get enough years of experience behind you, and grow your knowledge in the field whether it鈥檚 taking classes at a college in child development or obtaining certifications relating to childcare.

Q&A with Tina Selig, Career Nanny

Nannying is about more than keeping children safe鈥攊t鈥檚 about guiding them, supporting families, and being a steady, trusted presence in their lives. Over the years, I鈥檝e learned to rely less on boundless energy and more on patience, intuition, and experience.

How has your role as a nanny changed over the years?

I began nannying at 18, full of energy and excitement to play, read stories, and care for children. Back then, I saw it as a job I loved. Now, at 51, I realize just how much my role has grown. Nannying is about more than keeping children safe鈥攊t鈥檚 about guiding them, supporting families, and being a steady, trusted presence in their lives.

Over the years, I鈥檝e learned to rely less on boundless energy and more on patience, intuition, and experience. I鈥檝e watched children grow from babies to young adults, and I鈥檝e seen how small moments鈥攃omforting tears, sharing a laugh, teaching kindness鈥攃an have a lasting impact.

What began as a passion has truly become my life鈥檚 work. Every day I鈥檓 reminded of the joy, responsibility, and privilege of being part of a child鈥檚 life.

To fellow nannies: your work matters more than you know. To parents: thank you for trusting us with your greatest treasures.

How did you get started as a nanny?

My journey as a nanny began in my senior year of high school, caring for three energetic boys who lived on a beautiful lake. Our days were full of boating, golf, and endless laughter鈥攊t was a perfect introduction to the world of childcare.

During my first year of college in Boston, I worked for a nanny agency while pursuing a degree in Travel and Tourism. After graduation, I joined the second-largest travel agency in the United States, building a career in Boston. Everything was going well鈥攗ntil September 11th changed the travel industry overnight. The travel industry came to a standstill, uncertainty filled the air, and suddenly, what once felt like a secure career vanished. It was a moment that forced me to rethink my path and consider what truly mattered in life.

I returned to something I had always loved: caring for children. That decision turned into a full-time, lifelong career, and I haven鈥檛 looked back since. Nannying has been more than a job鈥攊t鈥檚 been a calling, a passion, and a privilege.

What鈥檚 the most heartwarming thing a child has ever said or done for you?

Tina Selig

One moment that truly touched me happened just last year, when my son got his driver鈥檚 license. The very next day, I arrived at my nanny family鈥檚 home, and there on the kitchen island was a hand-written card signed by the boys, balloons, and even a gift card for gas鈥攁ll for my son.

That gesture spoke volumes about the love and thoughtfulness of the family I work for. It reminded me in such a real and emotional way why nannying is more than a job鈥攊t鈥檚 about being part of a family鈥檚 life, sharing in their joys, and building connections that go both ways. Even now, thinking about what they did for my own child still brings tears to my eyes.

How To Put Your Best Foot Forward in the Application Process

From your first interaction with a BAHS team member to signing the contract with a client, every step of the process is an important reflection of who you are as a candidate. This week, we are sharing some tips on how to put your best foot forward during the BAHS application process. If you鈥檝e been struggling to get an interview, it might be time to make some changes to how you approach your job search.

During the Application Process,

Make Sure You Are…

1. Responsive

BAHS jobs are highly competitive and clients expect prompt responses from recruiters and candidates. If a BAHS team member reaches out to you with a question, please respond quickly. If you apply to a job on our job board, please pay attention to your phone and email in the following days. We, of course, understand that an immediate response is not always possible (especially when candidates are currently working another job) but we suggest you try to respond within 24-hours when actively job-seeking. Clients expect a quick turnaround and if you don鈥檛 provide the necessary information in time, you are likely missing out on opportunities.

Make sure BAHS has the best contact info for you and check your email/phone daily while job seeking.聽

2. Organized and Up to Date

Doublecheck that your resume is up-to-date with your current and most recent roles, as well as any new certifications or skills. Make sure that your resume, LinkedIn, and any other public-facing profiles are aligned and accurate.

3. Thoughtful and Detail-Oriented

Please read the details carefully of any job that you apply for on聽. It is important that you聽only聽apply to jobs that you are qualified for and truly interested in. 聽If you apply to every role on聽, you may end up getting overlooked for the roles you are actually interested in. If you have any questions about particular roles, you can always reach out to our team.

4. Open to Feedback

Our team of recruiters are here to support you. On occasion, they may have feedback before or after the interview process; it鈥檚 important that you remain open to this and remember they are trying to help you succeed. Sometimes you may be unaware of an area that you could improve in and our recruiters have experience in guiding candidates to put their best foot forward.

5. Professional

We understand that it can be frustrating to wait to hear back on a role, and disappointing when a position doesn鈥檛 work out. However, it is crucial that you maintain your composure and professionalism with BAHS clients and BAHS team members at all times. Remember, the BAHS team all share notes and information with one another; if you are rude or disrespectful to one team member, it will affect the profile all BAHS employees view.

It鈥檚 also important to make sure your online persona is professional. Doublecheck all public social media profiles.聽Click here for our top tips for optimizing your online presence for employers.

6. Honest

We cannot work with candidates who are dishonest in any way. This applies to every area of the job-seeking process, from skills and dates listed on a resume to references to compensation details you might speak to a client about. If there is a gap on your resume or other issue you think might be holding you back during the application process, please reach out to our team to talk. We are always interested in getting a better picture of a full candidate; usually these problems do not immediately disqualify candidates, but lying to team members or falsifying information will terminate your relationship with the agency.

7. Discrete

We understand the ins and outs of the domestic staffing agency. Many families ask for NDAs and we expect you to honor anything you have signed; in this case, please list 鈥減rivate family鈥 or similar on your resume. Please also exercise discretion when speaking about past employers to our team, and to clients. You want to give honest information about your experience, without jeopardizing the previous employer鈥檚 trust and confidentiality.

8. Able to Provide References

References are a vital part of our process when working with candidates. We cannot place candidates who cannot provide references for at least the last ten years of work. You can find some reference tips here.

How Domestic Staffing Agencies Advocate For Nannies & Household Staff

In this post, we鈥檙e highlighting some of the key ways agencies advocate for nannies and other household staff. Our goals are aligned with our candidates鈥 goals: we seek to make long-term, quality matches between employers and employees, and to offer ongoing support after the match has been made.

1.We have carefully vetted every job for you.

When you visit our聽, you鈥檙e reviewing job listings from real families that we鈥檝e already spoken with and who are actively seeking high quality staff. We only work with families who pay legally and fairly – something you can鈥檛 always count on when using unmonitored job boards.

2. We educate employers.

We continually share information with our clients on not just labor laws, but general best practices in the home. We help clients understand what each type of role entails (and what it doesn鈥檛.) We share ideas for employee benefits and market rate compensation; we encourage our clients to invest in employee professional development. Our goal is employee longevity; positive long-term matches benefit everyone.

3. We negotiate on your behalf.聽

We can negotiate salary, benefits, hours, living arrangements, and more; our goal is to make sure the job works for both you and the client in the long-term. We counsel candidates on what鈥檚 realistic based on experience and current market rates, and we provide those expectations to clients upfront. This ensures everyone is aligned from the start and avoids awkward financial conversations later.

4. We advise on laws and industry norms.

We can advise on what the employment laws are for your specific area, as well as market trends and industry norms. This is especially useful for candidates that are moving locations, leaving a very long-term job, or transitioning into a new field, and may not know what to expect.

5. We provide feedback and help candidates grow.

Our team offers personalized feedback on your resume, experience, and job search strategy. If you鈥檝e been job-hunting without success, our recruiters can offer honest insights into what might be holding you back鈥攁nd how to improve.

Click here for our blog post on聽Common Reasons Candidates Are Not Selected.

6. We present the whole you to employers.聽

Our team gets to know our candidates – their goals, past experiences, skills, and passions. We are matchmakers and pride ourselves on finding the right fit for the client and the candidate. When we present your profile to a potential employer, we often share more than just your resume – we offer insight into your personality and strengths, plus provide context, if needed, for gaps in your resume or short-term roles.

7. We understand the challenges.

Most of the BAHS team started their careers in the household staffing industry. Our team includes former nannies, Norland nannies, yacht staff, educators, governesses, house managers, and estate managers. These experiences allow our staff to understand the unique challenges that come with each of these roles.

8. We are a community.

We host in-person events on the East and West Coasts on the US (more cities coming soon!) for candidates to meet our team, ask questions, and network with others in their field. We also have a vibrant online community on our聽听补苍诲听; follow us for job announcements, tips, event info, giveaways, and more.

9. We provide support and resources during the entire process, including if something goes wrong.

We support you at every step. From聽resume templates听补苍诲听interview tips聽to networking opportunities and contract/offer letter guidance, we offer the resources you need for a successful job search. Once placed in a role, we are still here for you; we encourage candidates to reach out if they need advice for dealing with tricky workplace conversations or situations. In the event that a role ends, we can help navigate the transition, as well as assist you in finding a new role as soon as possible.

10. We never charge candidates for our services

All of our services are always 100% free for candidates.

Reference Tips

Once selected to join the BAHS roster, you will be subject to a reference check. Having your references prepared in advance will make this process smoother and faster.

You can find a reference letter request template here.

Provide Recent References

Make sure to have your reference letters uploaded to your profile in our system. This helps streamline the process and ensures we have the necessary documentation when it鈥檚 time to check your references.

Upload Your Reference Letters

Applicants who cannot provide reference contact information for past employers will be immediately removed from the BAHS roster. It’s crucial to have valid and up-to-date reference details ready to avoid delays in your application.

Reference Letter vs Verbal Reference

Typically, the employer will decide how they’d prefer to give a reference. Often, an employer will provide a detailed letter – this will save them time later as they won’t have to repeat themselves over multiple reference calls. Reference letters should ideally include dates of employment, responsibilities, strengths and weaknesses, and the reason the position ended.聽Even if you have a reference letter, you must still provide the employer’s contact information (phone and email preferably). The agency will have to verify the letter and future employers may want to speak directly with the letter writer. Be sure to always respect the employer’s wishes and pass along any specific instructions to the agency – for example, if the employer prefers to be contacted via email, cell, or office phone, let us know and we will do our best to accommodate.

If you’re providing contact information for a reference you worked for in the past, we suggest reaching out to them first to confirm your contact information is up to date and give them notice that they should expect to be contacted. Don’t forget to thank references for taking the time to speak on your behalf!

References provided to the agency should all be聽professional聽references, not personal contacts, family members, or friends.

False references are a crime

Remember, listing fake references on your resume or providing false contact info is a crime. This could have serious consequences, including fees and legal repercussions. And, of course, if you provide false information to the agency, we will no longer be able to work with you or help with your job search.

References FAQ

What happens if I provide a reference but I鈥檓 still working there and don鈥檛 want them to know I鈥檓 job hunting?

We will not contact your reference without your explicit approval. If you’re concerned about confidentiality, please let us know during the initial interview with the Talent Acquisition team.

Why do you ask for references?

References are critical to the job seeking process. It’s a great way to let your work speak for itself – your past employers can share your skills, passions, and triumphs for you. We pride ourselves are matching top quality candidates with great jobs; references are one tool we use to get a sense of candidates鈥 various skillsets and experience. The agency will ask for references and contact information for every job you’ve had over at least the last ten years.

Will the agency contact my references multiple times?

No, in most cases the agency will reach out to each reference once. We keep this information on file so all recruiters can access it. However, potential employers may wish to speak with references directly when you’re being seriously considered for a position.

What if an employer is unable to provide a reference directly?

Sometimes high-profile or confidential employers do not wish to be contacted after an employee leaves. In this case, they might write a letter – this letter will still need to have contact information for the principal or a verified staff member, such as a personal assistant.

Sometimes, it may be appropriate for another member of staff to provide a reference – for example, a house or estate manager may provide a reference for a nanny or housekeeper. In situations where the employer is notable to give a reference directly, a high-ranking employee who worked closely with you may be suitable. Remember, a supervisor is usually a better choice than a coworker, if possible.

How do I ask a past employer for a reference?

If you are missing a reference from a past employer, it is best to reach out to them (or a member of their team) and politely ask. Asking for references is a common practice and most past employers will not be surprised by this request; however, it also requires time and energy, so be clear and accommodating in your request and don鈥檛 forget to thank those that provide references for you. If it鈥檚 been a long amount of time since the position ended or the position was short, you might include a brief description of your time together, including dates and position.

Always remember to thank those who provide a reference for you. Once you start a new job, it鈥檚 often good practice to follow up sharing the good news and thanking them again for their help.

You can find a reference letter request template here.

What if I can’t get a reference?

Ending a domestic staffing role can be difficult, especially if the position was long-term and the family has come to rely on your work. However, if you communicate, provide plenty of notice and behave professionally until the end, most families will still provide a reference for a good employee, even if they wish the employment had lasted longer. We recommend doing whatever you reasonably can to make the transition smooth, including offering to train the next employee, leaving a comprehensive handbook if applicable etc.

In the event that an employer refuses to give a reference, it is best to communicate this with the agency upfront. If something happened during your employment or upon termination, be open and honest about the circumstances. We can guide you through the best course of action.

Tips for Success During the Trial Phase

You鈥檝e had a successful interview (or several) and now you have arranged a聽trial聽in a client鈥檚 home. That鈥檚 great news but the job is not yet secured – 聽a聽trial聽is your opportunity to show off your skills, learn more about the job, and find out if its a good fit for both employer and employee. This week, we鈥檝e compiled our top tips for a successful聽trial. Remember, our recruiters are always here to help if you have questions or need advice before a聽trial.

What is a Trial?

础听trial聽is a short (usually 1-3 days) time period where a candidate works in the family鈥檚 home and, ideally, mimics regular work days. This is the chance for the candidate, the client, the other staff, and any children to see how they work together and if it is a good fit.

Our Top Trial Tips聽

Dress for Success.

础听trial聽is different than an interview in that you will be on your feet doing work most of the day. Dress professionally and dress appropriately for the work at hand. The goal is to be polished and practical. Until you better know the family鈥檚 preferences, it is best to avoid perfumes and scented products, and to keep makeup, hair, and nails simple.

Be Prepared and On Time.

It is critical that you are not late to a聽trial. While we all understand life happens, a聽trial聽is your chance to give a client a glimpse into what working with you will be like. If you are late at this stage, many clients will assume you are unreliable and consistently late, even if that is not the case. Most clients are very busy and many won鈥檛 even meet with a candidate who arrives late. First impressions are extremely important. We recommend planning your route ahead of time, allowing extra time for unexpected delays, and even doing a test-run of the trip if the address seems tricky to locate. Depending on the hours of the聽trial, it is best to come ready with a simple lunch, snacks, and water for yourself. The client may provide food but if it isn鈥檛 explicitly discussed ahead of time, it is better to be prepared than sorry.

Put Your Best Foot Forward.

Ask the recruiter ahead of time if there are any specific requests or information you should know. Get a good night鈥檚 sleep the night before. Brainstorm questions you might have for the principal. Think about things you learned in the previous client interviews that may help you succeed at this stage in the process.

础听trial聽is a careful balance of following a client鈥檚 lead and being proactive and showing your experience and how you can excel in the role. Err on the side of proactivity and try to anticipate needs without overstepping. Make sure to be respectful of other staff and remember that your behavior with every person in the home matters. Silence and stay off your phone (except in the case of emergencies) and be present in all your interactions.

Ask Questions.

础听trial聽is for the benefit of both the client and the candidate so make sure you ask questions about the role and expectations. The goal is to find out if it is the right fit on both sides. Asking appropriate questions also indicates to the client that you are engaged and serious about the role.

Be Yourself.

The best advice is to be your best authentic and professional self. A job will not be sustainable if you鈥檝e behaved differently in the聽trial聽than you would in real day-to-day life. You are likely to be happier in a position long-term and find a better fit if you present your real self during the聽trial.

Follow Up.

Consider drafting up a simple Thank You card beforehand thanking the family for their time and consideration of you for this role. Put in an envelope and leave with the principal or your main contact in the home upon leaving. You could also follow up with a simple text or email t hanking them for their time; you can also send this to the recruiter in charge and ask them to forward it to the client. If you aren鈥檛 sure what kind of communication is appropriate, feel free to ask the recruiter who is working with you on the role for advice.

If after the聽trial, you don鈥檛 feel the role is for you, it is best to communicate this directly with the recruiter who sent you and let them speak to the client about it. It鈥檚 best to be honest and direct with recruiters so they can best assist you in your job search.

Optimizing Your Online Presence for Future Employers

Your online presence is often the first impression potential employers will have of you. According to聽, 77% of employers will do an online search of a candidate before meeting them. The reality is that recruitment agencies and future employers do their due diligence on all potential candidates, especially those who work in private homes. We’ve put together our list of the top tips to make sure you’re putting your best foot forward online.

Google Yourself

We recommend googling yourself often – log out of all profiles then search your name, your phone number, any previous names etc. This will give you a sense of what employers can and cannot see and is a good way to find out if there are old or unused profiles you may have forgotten about. Don’t forget to click on ‘Images’ and ‘Videos’ and scan through those results for any relevant content. Even things like old Google reviews you have left with profanity or other information may hurt your chances with an employer so be thorough in this search. Be sure to do this often as privacy settings change frequently and others may ‘tag’ or share content you aren’t aware of.

Take the Time to Understand Privacy Settings

Sit down and review the privacy settings on every online platform you use. This includes, but isn’t limited to, social media such as聽,听, and聽, as well as professional sites like聽. Double check your settings and make sure your personal content is private.

Choose Your Profile Photo Wisely

Even with privacy settings on, most platforms will show the public your main photo. You don’t necessarily need a photo by a paid professional but it should be a good quality photo with your face clearly visible. A simple headshot style photo will do or a photo of you doing what you do best! Chefs may choose a photo in their uniform in the kitchen while a chauffeur may pose outside his vehicle (of course, make sure no personal information, like license plates, is visible!). For nannies, we actually recommend avoiding photos with the visible face of any child – it’s better to use a solo photo or perhaps one of you holding a baby, with the child facing away from the camera.

Be Thoughtful about Posts

It’s best to present a professional, positive image online. To accomplish this, you’ll need to be diligent and careful. Think twice before posting photos or sharing content from third parties. Remember that not everyone shares the same beliefs and that a post you might find funny, a potential employer might find offensive. When you do post public content, be sure to proofread and fact-check it, and make sure anything you share is thoughtful, clear, and an opinion you can stand behind long-term. We recommend steering clear of any content related to controversial views, alcohol, drugs, sensitive material, or profanity.

Be Consistent

Double check all the information across your platforms is accurate and consistent. Graduation dates, names of universities, past employer information and dates, cities lived in etc. should be up to date and consistent across all platforms. Inconsistencies and mistakes can make you look careless, or worse, like you’re being dishonest.

Delete Old Profiles

You may have old profiles set up on nanny sites or on older social media sites, such as Myspace. We recommend doing your best to have these removed or deactivated if they no longer accurately represent who you are. For example, it won’t help if employers can see an old nanny profile where you’ve listed a much lower hourly rate than you’re currently asking for.

Be Prepared

If you do have an active and visible online presence or something you cannot remove, be prepared to respond to questions about it during an interview. If there is something posted that you cannot have taken down for any reason, be honest and upfront about the circumstances surrounding it, and then move on.

Introducing Catch & Its Founders

This week, we sat down with聽Alexa Irish and Laura聽Speyer,听co-CEOs of聽Catch,听a 蹿谤别别听尘补谤办别迟辫濒补肠别 for employees who don’t receive health insurance through their job. The pair took the time to open up about the company mission, managing motherhood and entrepreneurship, and how Catch can help those seeking health insurance. As a proud partner of Catch, 百花视频 is pleased to offer all BAHS members premium access to the site, including free 1-on-1 support and tailored plan recommendations. This is a great resource to share with staff.

Open Enrollment is the only time of year when anyone can enroll in health insurance. It runs from November 1 to January 15 in most states. If you need coverage by January 1, 2025, make sure to enroll by December 15. Once Open Enrollment ends, you鈥檒l only be able to get insurance if you have a big life change, like having a baby or losing your job.You can explore insurance plans before the upcoming deadline.

Q&A with the founders of Catch, Laura Speyer and Alexa Irish聽

Alexa Irish and Laura Speyer, co-CEOs of Catch

Can you tell us a little about yourselves and why you decided to acquire Catch in 2023?When we left our corporate jobs, we experienced for ourselves just how hard it is to get decent benefits when you鈥檙e on your own. We acquired Catch to help everyone get the great coverage they deserve, at the best prices available.

How would you describe the company鈥檚 mission? We want to make it easier for everyone to work on their own terms. Think of us as a personalized HR department, the friendly experts who help you get corporate-style benefits without the corporate job.

Do you think that people can make an informed decision about the health insurance they buy based on the information that鈥檚 out there?There鈥檚 lots of great information out there if you have the time to do extensive research and learn all the healthcare jargon 鈥 most of our members are too busy for that! We鈥檙e here to help our members save time and worry, by giving them streamlined recommendations for a full suite of coverage. You shouldn鈥檛 have to speak legalese or sift through hundreds of plans to get great healthcare.

What was the biggest hurdle you both had to overcome since you took the reins at Catch? There are so many other ways we鈥檇 love to help self-employed workers and expand our product offering, and not enough hours in the day to make it happen!

How do you manage being an entrepreneur and a mother? With lots and lots and lots of help 鈥 I have so much respect for all the incredible BAHS nannies and NCSs. Catch (and I) wouldn鈥檛 function without three amazing partnerships: Alexa, who holds down the fort during preschool dropoff, bedtime and a million other kid crises; my husband, who does way more than his fair share; and our saint of a nanny, the exceptional Helen Moon, who we met through BAHS!

Do you have any tips for nannies or domestic workers looking for health insurance?First, even if you think you earn too much to qualify, double-check to see if you can get income-based subsidies through your state. Many of our customers end up saving a lot more than they expect. Second, do NOT ignore deadline reminders from your state or your carrier! Deadlines for enrolling and paying for your health plan are often extremely strict, and if you miss them, can mean you lose coverage for the whole rest of the year.

Frequently Asked Questions About Catch

My employer isn鈥檛 covering health insurance. How can Catch help me?Catch is a one-stop shop to help you find health, dental, and vision insurance that fits your life. Share what’s most important to you, like how you plan to use your health coverage. We’ll show you the plans that work best for your needs, goals, and budget. Once you’ve chosen a plan, we’ll help you apply and enroll. We’ll also check for savings.

Do you work with many nannies? Domestic workers?Catch works with people across all industries. Nannies, founders, therapists, freelancers, photographers, writers, realtors, and more. If you are someone who buys their own health insurance, Catch is here to help.

When does open enrollment end?Open enrollment ends on January 16th for the federal marketplace. The state-based marketplaces can vary so it is important to check your state鈥檚 deadline date.

Can you only enroll once per year? If so, why?Open enrollment only happens once a year. The idea behind having a brief window is that if anyone could get health insurance whenever they wanted, then no one would get it when they were healthy, and everyone would get it when they got sick or injured. Special Enrollment (outside of Open Enrollment) is possible if you’ve recently had a big life event – lost your healthcare, got married, or moved.

How can I get started?Getting started with Catch is easy. Simply head to the dedicated BAHS page and enter some info to get rolling.

How do I know which plan to choose?Picking the right plan varies depending on you. The plans exist on a spectrum. On one end, Platinum plans offer the highest premiums but the lowest cost for care. On the other, Bronze plans offer lower premiums but higher costs for care.

How does the VIP access work if I鈥檓 a candidate of BAHS?BAHS candidates have who will review their information and help them pick the best plan that fits their needs.

Do you work with every state in the US?Yes, we work in all 50 states.

Your service is available at no cost. What鈥檚 the catch? There is no catch! We believe that everyone should have access to quality healthcare while understanding what they are buying and what their benefits are.

VIP access when you’re part of 百花视频 includes:
