What does being a nanny mean to you, and what makes this work meaningful?

Being a nanny is a chance to make a positive life long impact. Whether it is helping a child build their self confidence, find their niche, or their voice. What are some ways you keep yourself up to date with child development or other skill sets?

Childcare is ever evolving and as professional Nannies we should be as well. I truly believe we are never done learning. I try to take a few courses and gain new certifications every year. Another way to see what鈥檚 new in our field and learn from others in the industry is attending your local International Nanny Training Day. I鈥檝e enjoyed going to this event as both an attendee and as speaker.

How has your role as a nanny changed over the years?

My role as a nanny has taken many forms. I have been a traditional M-F nanny, travel nanny, NCS, family assistant, and currently I am a Rota nanny. I have truly worked with all ages. From a few days old to those awkward teen years. That鈥檚 one of the reasons I love being a nanny. You have听endless opportunities to change and grow听alongside your career.

How do you build strong relationships with the children and families you work with?

Life as a nanny means showing up as your most authentic self because of how deeply personal the job is-you become part of a family and they become part of you. I believe nannies have such a wealth of both knowledge and love to give. Kids are engaged when you take an interest in what they are interested in. They鈥檙e also curious- so sharing your passions and introducing them to new experiences and ideas is essential. Building trust through open communication with parents, ensuring we work together as a united team is vital in creating consistency, security, and an environment where children can truly thrive.

How has your role as a nanny changed over the years?

My role as a nanny has evolved alongside the children I care for and from family to family. Over the years my role has shifted from meeting their basic needs, building routines, and nurturing their sense of safety and trust to fostering independence, supporting academic development, and encouraging social-emotional growth. The joy of long-term roles is getting to experience all these moments year to year from first days of preschool to senior prom. Life as a nanny during COVID was such a life-changing experience. Balancing limited social interaction, and new safety routines while still keeping the days engaging and comforting, as well as navigating remote learning for school aged kids deepened my adaptability and reinforced the importance of being both consistent and innovative in my care.

Children should be your passion.听Be reliable and consistent and fun! Be flexible and learn how to read a room. See a need, fill a need and you will be totally fulfilled and successful!

How has your role as a nanny changed over the years?

My career has evolved over the last decade from helping working parents make their lives run as smoothly as possible and take care of their children. Over time I have had other positions including being a tour nanny for a celebrity family and now I help manage homes and nanny for the rich and famous. I have cared for听neurodivergent听kiddos, 4 sets of twins and flown private. I am thankful for where my career has taken me and look forward to the future!

How do you think society views nannies, and what would you like to change about that perception?

What鈥檚 the most heartwarming thing a child has ever said or done for you?

It definitely has to be when they randomly tell me 鈥淚 love you鈥 accompanied by a hug or just saying it while we鈥檙e in the car or playing. Truly the best feeling.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out as a nanny or thinking about entering the field?

My advice would be that if you鈥檙e thinking about it, do it. The more experience you have behind you, the better. References are everything so when hired, whether it鈥檚 Babysitting or your first Nanny job, it鈥檚 important that you do your best job so that parents have wonderful things to share about you when wanting to move up in the Nanny ladder. Also, don鈥檛 be afraid to network and put yourself out there. Make a flyer for yourself advertising your services and post them in local Facebook groups, work with agencies once you get enough years of experience behind you, and grow your knowledge in the field whether it鈥檚 taking classes at a college in child development or obtaining certifications relating to childcare.

How has your role as a nanny changed over the years?

I began nannying at 18, full of energy and excitement to play, read stories, and care for children. Back then, I saw it as a job I loved. Now, at 51, I realize just how much my role has grown. Nannying is about more than keeping children safe鈥攊t鈥檚 about guiding them, supporting families, and being a steady, trusted presence in their lives.

Over the years, I鈥檝e learned to rely less on boundless energy and more on patience, intuition, and experience. I鈥檝e watched children grow from babies to young adults, and I鈥檝e seen how small moments鈥攃omforting tears, sharing a laugh, teaching kindness鈥攃an have a lasting impact.

What began as a passion has truly become my life鈥檚 work. Every day I鈥檓 reminded of the joy, responsibility, and privilege of being part of a child鈥檚 life.

How did you get started as a nanny?

My journey as a nanny began in my senior year of high school, caring for three energetic boys who lived on a beautiful lake. Our days were full of boating, golf, and endless laughter鈥攊t was a perfect introduction to the world of childcare.

During my first year of college in Boston, I worked for a nanny agency while pursuing a degree in Travel and Tourism. After graduation, I joined the second-largest travel agency in the United States, building a career in Boston. Everything was going well鈥攗ntil September 11th changed the travel industry overnight. The travel industry came to a standstill, uncertainty filled the air, and suddenly, what once felt like a secure career vanished. It was a moment that forced me to rethink my path and consider what truly mattered in life.

I returned to something I had always loved: caring for children. That decision turned into a full-time, lifelong career, and I haven鈥檛 looked back since. Nannying has been more than a job鈥攊t鈥檚 been a calling, a passion, and a privilege.

What鈥檚 the most heartwarming thing a child has ever said or done for you?

Tina Selig

One moment that truly touched me happened just last year, when my son got his driver鈥檚 license. The very next day, I arrived at my nanny family鈥檚 home, and there on the kitchen island was a hand-written card signed by the boys, balloons, and even a gift card for gas鈥攁ll for my son.

That gesture spoke volumes about the love and thoughtfulness of the family I work for. It reminded me in such a real and emotional way why nannying is more than a job鈥攊t鈥檚 about being part of a family鈥檚 life, sharing in their joys, and building connections that go both ways. Even now, thinking about what they did for my own child still brings tears to my eyes.

After having her son in 2020, she realized that even after years of competitive swimming, lifeguarding, and coaching, she had some intense anxiety when it came to taking him around the water that first summer. So she dove back into learning new tips and tricks to share with the nanny community, mainly on her Instagram , and has been talking about it ever since.

8 Top Water Safety Tips

1. First and foremost, this is honestly the biggest tip —听enroll your children in swim lessons TODAY. Swimming is a life skill that can literally save a person鈥檚 life. When you鈥檙e looking for a class or an instructor if you鈥檙e not going the ISR (Infant Swimming Resource) route, you want to clarify that you want an听emphasis on survival skills. Rolling onto their back to float. Kicking to the wall. Holding onto the wall and moving to the ladder or stairs.

2. Assign a water watcher. When you think everyone is watching the pool, no one is watching. If you鈥檙e hosting a party or a get together, rotate water watchers or hire a lifeguard. Water watchers need to be听蝉辞产别谤听and they need to be听adults. Children cannot watch other children.

3. Have听as many barriers in place as possible听to prevent a child quietly sneaking out into the pool. Pool covers, a fence, locking gates, and door alarms (on the doggy door too!) are all necessary if you鈥檙e a homeowner with a pool.

4. Drain the water away when you鈥檙e through with play.听It takes only 2 inches for a child to drown. Empty the tub and make sure the plug is out of reach, the water tables, and the kiddie pools too.

5. Know the signs of drowning听鈥 it is not always splashy and loud like it is in the movies. It can be, but other times it is quiet. The person (child) is in the vertical position with their arms straight out and they might not be able to get their mouth above the water.

6. Not all drownings are fatal. There are some with a quick enough rescue that there is no damage to the person. Others involve severe brain damage. If you come across someone who has experienced a drowning incident, give them 2 rescue breaths before continuing CPR.

7. Floaties give children a false sense of security. They are marketed as a learn to swim aid and make parents and caregivers believe they are necessary for learning water skills. They are not. They do not.听Lifejackets are absolutely necessary for being on a moving watercraft听and specialized floats like puddle jumpers are approved for walking on boat docks and pool decks. None of these have been approved for swimming in pools.

8.Choose bright swim suits to stand out in the water. Blues and greens blend in, so find other options like red, orange, yellow, and pink. If you鈥檙e unable to find a suit with those colors, throw on a bright swim shirt and have the added benefit of sun protection.

What’s right for my family? Babysitter, Au Pair, or Nanny?

Navigating the world of childcare can be tricky for parents. There are so many options out there – babysitters, au pairs, nannies, full-time, part-time etc. In this blog post, we are sharing information on common types of caregivers so you can ascertain what works best for your family.

What is a babysitter?

A babysitter is often an on-call or as-needed role filled by someone with some childcare experience. Babysitters are often students or individuals with other professions who assist when needed. Babysitters help with many of the same duties as a nanny, such as dinner, homework help, and bedtime routine, but they are not a daily fixture in the child’s life. Babysitters usually don’t have knowledge of childhood development milestones or up-to-date best care practices; they also typically do not travel with the family. A babysitter is paid hourly and does not usually receive any additional workers’ benefits.听Babysitters are a good choice for infrequent, casual care, such as a monthly date night.

What is an au pair?

An au pair is typically a young person who assists with childcare in exchange for room and board. In most cases, this is a temporary position (usually under 2 years), and the caretaker will have limited professional past experience in childcare. An au pair lives in 7 days per week – many families view them as temporary family members.

What is a nanny?

A nanny is a professional childcare specialist.听They will have a substantial amount of childcare experience working with private families (minimum 5 years). Nannies may also be certified in newborn care, CPR & first aid, and may have taken classes or courses related to childhood care.

Career nannies may hold a degree in education or psychology. In England, many qualified nannies and governesses will hold a NNEB certificate which involves training on all forms of childcare from infant to special needs and places an emphasis on fieldwork. Tips for Handling听NannySickDays

When a staff member calls out听sick, it can cause stress for the employee and the employer, and can lead to schedule changes for the entire household. While it’s impossible to avoid all stress, there are certainly ways to make these unavoidable听days听a little easier for all involved. This week, we’ve compiled a few tips to best prepare and handle听days听when your听nanny听calls out听sick. Remember, BAHS recommends offering staff a minimum of 5听sick/personal听days听in addition to PTO听days听for planned vacation. Make sure your staff members have two consecutive听days听off in a row each week and a reasonable daily schedule to allow them to rest and recharge in between shifts; this will allow employees to be the best, healthiest version of themselves.

Be compassionate.

When a听nanny听(or any staff member) calls out听sick, be kind, keep any questions to a minimum, and then move on to arranging alternate care. Unless specifically agreed ahead of time, it isn’t the听sick听employee’s job to organize backup care for the day or communicate with coverage. While this change of plans might complicate your schedule for the day, don’t take this stress out on the employee. One day of inconvenience is much easier to deal with than fixing a relationship with a good employee who feels underappreciated or uncared for.听Remember, all employees are human and all of us get听sick. By making the day stress-free for your听sick听employee, you increase the likelihood that they can rest and return to work quickly, as well as communicate to them that you care about them as a whole person.

Be proactive & have a backup plan.

We recommend all families have a backup plan in place for instances when the main听nanny听calls in听sick. For families with more than one nannies for multiple children, this might be as simple as asking another听nanny听to take on an additional charge for the day. In other homes, the housekeeper is equipped to help out with childcare for a day or two. Sometimes, family members, neighbors, or a weekend babysitter can step in. Whatever the case is for your family, make sure that you have a plan beforehand to reduce stress for everyone. Have conversations with the backup care about routines, allergies, and other safety precautions in advance. Set the backup caretaker up for success by filling them in on the current skills, interests, challenges, favorite toys, schedule etc. of your child.

Keep your child in the loop.

While it may not feel like a big change to adults, little ones can be thrown off by an unexpected change to routine. Be sure to communicate to your child that their听nanny听is听sick听but will return soon. Give them specific details about how their day will change and who will be picking up them up from school and other activities. Remember to communicate the change in caretaker to teachers and any other adults who might need to be updated.

Check in during the day.

We highly recommend checking in with the backup caretaker during the day to keep both your minds at ease. They will likely need more support than your regular听nanny. Finally, it is appropriate to check in with your听nanny听near the end of the day to see how they are feeling and find out if you will need backup care the following day or if they are hopeful they will be able to return to work.

What do I do if I have a听nanny听who routinely calls out听sick?听

It can be a very tricky situation when you have an otherwise excellent employee who has started to frequently call out sick. The first step in this situation would be to have a kind, open, honest and direct conversation with the employee; the goal is both to ascertain if something is going on with the employee (perhaps they’re struggling with a chronic illness or are having a problem at home) and听also to find a solution that works for both of you. You need reliable care;听find out what they need – perhaps this is a temporary problem听that can be remedied by a听flexible schedule in the short-term听(if you can accommodate that) or perhaps it is part of a larger problem that might require extended time off or a shift听to a part-time role. Whatever the case is, be clear about expectations going forward – and what support you can realistically offer. If the employee does not engage in the conversation or does not acknowledge there is a problem, be sure to document the conversation clearly and review with them the听sick听leave policy and future expectations.

Introduction to TrustLine: California’s Background Check for Childcare Providers

TrustLine is听legally required听for all NBCS, Nannies, Family Assistants, Nanny/Housekeepers, and Nanny/PAs in the state of California. The process involves an extensive background check and fingerprinting but once completed, you never have to do it again. Once your trust line application has been processed and approved, you will receive a trust line identification number you can give to future employers and agencies can verify that you are TrustLine certified.

You only need to be TrustLine certified if you work in the听state of California听or have future plans to work in California. You must have a Driver鈥檚 License or an Identification number in order to apply.

百花视频 has its own code and PIN number that you can attach to your application. Both the code and the PIN number will allow our team to be able to monitor your application process and will inform us when it is complete. Our agency code is TLR0007475 and our agency PIN number is 5BUTN5.

Do I have to be TrustLine Certified to work with BAHS?

If you are applying to any positions in the state of California that require working with children then the answer is听yes.听If you are looking for a new position now or anytime in the future in the state of California, 百花视频 is now required by law to confirm that听all California candidates seeking work with children must be听TrustLine听Certified. This applies to all California candidates and out of state candidates who are looking for work in California.听If you work or intend to work in any other state or internationally, it is not required at this time. Note that BAHS will still conduct our standard due diligence, reference checks, security screenings etc. for all candidates, regardless of location.

I want to be TrustLine certified. What do I have to do?

Applicants听complete听, which requires submitting fingerprints and a one-time fee of approximately $135.00, to the Department of Social Services. You must have a Driver鈥檚 License or an Identification number in order to apply. If applicants pass the background check, they are listed on the TrustLine database. You can find more instructions here.听

What does TrustLine check?听

TrustLine is an effective tool for parents to check the backgrounds听of a baby-sitters, nannies, tutors and in-home counselors to determine if an applicant has criminal convictions听or substantiated child abuse reports in California. TrustLine is the only听background check authorized by state law to use three databases that the general听public, including private investigators and private background check companies,听cannot access. These databases include the fingerprint records from the California听Department of Justice鈥檚 California Criminal History System; the Child Abuse听Central Index of California; and fingerprint records of the FBI Criminal History听System.

I have been TrustLine certified. Do I need to renew every year?

No, you only have to complete the application process once.

Do I pay for TrustLine or does the Agency?

Since it is legally required in the state of California, it is considered a prerequisite like CPR certification, so candidates are responsible for the cost (a one-time fee of about $135).

How long does it take to get TrustLine Certified?

Once you have sent in all the required paperwork and completed your fingerprinting, it can take up to 2 weeks to process your application if you live in the state of California and up to 6 weeks if you live out of state.

I think I鈥檓 certified but am not sure…how do I check?

To check if you are certified or to find out the status of your application, call TrustLine (1-800-822-8490) and leave a message; be prepared with your driver’s license or ID number and full name and they can easily check if you are registered and provide you with your TrustLine identification number.

What is most rewarding about being a nanny?听

I love being a nanny because my job doesn鈥檛 feel like work to me! My current position as a live-in nanny has allowed me to form such great relationships with my Nanny Family, who have been so welcoming and really made their home feel like my own. I wake up genuinely excited to spend the day with the coolest kid ever and love planning activities for us.

Nannying is so rewarding to me because I have the ability to make a positive, tangible difference for a family and because I have been able to experience so much love, growth, and form lifelong relationships. Childcare is my greatest passion and I am so grateful to British American House Staffing for helping me find a position that lets me live out my dream everyday in a life that I absolutely love.

What is a stereotype of Nannying you wish would be broken?听

I really wish the stigmatization of nannying not being viewed as a career could be dismissed! I don鈥檛 think people realize how important our jobs are and how much of an effect we are able to have on real people. Also, I studied hard in University to receive my degree in Child Developmental Psychology! I am proud to say that I am using my degree to help form the next generation. Little ones need so much love and attention during their development, and as the saying goes- it really does take a village. As a nanny, I put my heart and soul into what I do. My job definitely isn鈥檛 easy, but it is something I absolutely love!

What is听something you overcame as a nanny that could be encouraging to others?

The most important thing I overcame as a nanny is setting professional boundaries. Working in such an intimate environment often goes beyond what was agreed upon or even more than should be expected of you. It鈥檚 important to have the difficult conversions early, before accepting a position.

What does it mean to be a nanny in the part of the world and society that you live in?

Being a nanny has evolved since I started over twenty years ago. It鈥檚 now more often considered to be a career, as it should! As a career nanny I want my job to be respected and validated just as much as any other position in the workforce. There are many types of families in our world today and they all have various needs and moving parts. A nanny is an extension of that family; hired to facilitate a harmonious household among so many other things while fostering healthy and happy little ones!

Where is your happy place?

My happy place is to feel like a part of the family versus an employee.

What stereotypes of nannies do you wish were broken?听

There are so many stereotypes within the nanny industry. I am happy it started to come out of its shadows more recently. There are several stereotypes I wish would go away; it鈥檚 not a legitimate job, it鈥檚 a position only performed by workers that can鈥檛 do better or don鈥檛 have a choice, it鈥檚 a job for the uneducated or illegal residents鈥mong so many more.

What is most rewarding about being a nanny?

The most rewarding thing about being a nanny is that parents put 100% trust in you to help raise their children. Whether they have one or five, they are the most important part of their lives. It鈥檚 a pleasure to watch all the growth, milestones and the funny moments/ things they say..some of it just pure honesty!

Was there a specific moment that led to your decision to become a nanny?

A family I worked for while attending college reached out to me for temporary help. While I was with them I realized how much I enjoyed it. I actually missed them and the work I was doing. Within two years I went back full-time.

I have had so many funny moments over the past two decades. But the funniest that I remember to this day is probably inappropriate for print. But 3-4 year olds are hilarious!

One of the most rewarding aspects of being a Nanny is being able to make deeply impactful relationships with kids and their families, and ultimately becoming part of the family. It takes a lot of trust to allow someone into your home, and it鈥檚 not something I take lightly! I am incredibly humbled and grateful for the opportunities I have had.

听Was there a specific moment that led to your decision to become a nanny?

听What started as a babysitting gig during the COVID-19 pandemic turned into a remarkable and rewarding full-time career as a Nanny. Working with diverse and intricate families during such a sensitive time allowed me to learn the art of identifying family pain points, which in turn allowed me to leverage both my knowledge and skills to help families reach their ideal comfort levels. Since then, I have found my passion and my place, and I am not looking back!

What was something you overcame as a nanny that could be encouraging to others?

Toddlers’ tantrums and meltdowns in public are those that I overcome as a Nanny which when addressed properly may help other Nannies with this experience. It used to be so embarrassing when people stare at me but through time and practice I am able to navigate well how to calm their feelings and their bodies. First we don’t panic when people look at us even if their look is kind of demeaning but be calm and go to the child’s level and acknowledge their frustration over something he/she can not have.听 Then distract her/him by providing an alternative. We never reprimand them in public and instead hug them and verbalize positive feelings. This really works but we need to practice and be patient and persevering — with a smile!

What stereotypes of nannies do you wish were broken?听

The stereotypes of being a Nanny that I wish to be broken is for people who think Nannies are just baby sitters as if we just watch passively how the babies grow up. Nannies should be known as a profession with dedicated men and women who are highly educated, multi skilled and talented with high emotional quotient.

Was there a specific moment that led to your decision to become a nanny?

The specific moment that led to my decision to become a Nanny was when I听got my green card I decided that being a Nanny will be my chosen career. Instead of coming back to the corporate world.. I think of myself as a PA/EA of a child. I was a PA/EA/Secretary for CEOs before now I am a PA for the COO (child of owner) and personally assisting a future CEO. My job entails heavy communication, speaking on their behalf when they are unable yet to speak. My social work profession also helped in respecting and understanding children’s psychology and conveying non verbal communication.

Who inspires you in the nanny community?

The who is a company. It is听百花视频. This company inspires me… it is represented by their staff who are the epitome of the best headhunters who walk their talk. What the website says is truly what it is. You are the best.

One of the hardest things of being a nanny, will always be leaving the children you have cared for, protected and loved for part of your life. What is Montessori Parenting?

There are many different types of parenting and teaching methods out there – Montessori, Waldorf, RIE, Reggio Emilia, and more. It can be overwhelming for new and expecting parents to find what aligns best with their goals and values. Each method has its own benefits and often the best method is a mix of several styles blended together to meet the needs of the individual family and child. This week, we are sharing an introduction to the Montessori Method, an approach founded by Dr. Maria Montessori in Italy in the early 1900s. At its core, the Montessori Method is one that creates an environment for children that supports independence, curiosity and freedom. Children are encouraged to do tasks for themselves with minimal interference – they are given the space to learn through their own actions rather than through being told what to do. Highly trained teachers and nannies offer age-appropriate guidance while children actively learn at their own pace.

Respect for the Child

Montessori teaching is based on a deep respect for children’s ability to think, choose, and learn for themselves. It allows children to explore, learn, and experiment in a safe environment.听The method emphasizes the uniqueness of every child with the understanding that every child will learn at his or her own pace, motivated by their innate听curiosity.

Sensitive Periods

Montessori Theory states that children go through several “sensitive periods” during their first six or so years; during these periods, they are focused on building a certain set of skills or expanding knowledge in a certain area. These areas are听order, language, walking, the social aspects of life, small objects, and learning through the senses. Children move through these areas at their own pace, building skills and gaining confidence.

Prepared Environment

The Montessori environment, whether at home or in school, is a thoughtful, carefully curated space built specifically for little ones to explore with minimal听adult interference. The environment should embody freedom, structure, and beauty while encouraging social and intellectual engagement, as well as interaction with nature and everyday objects (pots and pans, zippers etc.). Montessori classrooms are usually well-lit with simple, well-made toys as well as stations where children can perform real-life tasks for themselves, such as an area with kitchen utensils to prepare a basic snack.

Independence and Discovery

One of the goals of Montessori parenting is to raise children that are invested and engaged in their own learning, children that are self-motivated and independent. This helps to build confidence, as well as ensure that children are not subjected to a “one size fits all” approach; instead, each child can move through at their own speed and fulfill their individual potential.
