What makes Blue Marble Private鈥檚 travel experiences unique?

We have long standing relationships that open doors to places and experiences that simply aren鈥檛 available off the shelf, whether that鈥檚 staying in a private home in Hawaii or meeting a winemaker in Burgundy whose family has been there for generations. But beyond the access, it鈥檚 the way we weave everything together, the pacing, the personal touches; it鈥檚 the little additions along the way that turn the trip into something entirely your own.

What does planning a trip with Blue Marble Private look like?

We try to make it as enjoyable and effortless as the trip itself. It usually starts with a conversation, getting to know what inspires you, how you like to travel, and what you鈥檙e hoping to get out of this journey. From there, we create a concept which outlines which destinations, hotels and experiences we have handpicked for you. We work on this collaboratively with you, balancing our expertise with your input, until it feels just right. We then get to work behind the scenes, confirming all the details and making sure everything is ready for your arrival. You receive a dedicated app which comes complete with daily details, contacts and useful information and throughout you have us at the other end of the phone, both during the planning and while you鈥檙e travelling.

How do you tailor trips to match individual client preferences?

Each client has a different personality, so we listen carefully to the details that matter the most. Some clients want to be as active as possible, others want cultural immersion, and some just want the feeling of escaping somewhere extraordinary. It鈥檚 not only about the destination but the structure of the days – do you like to pack them full of experiences or would you rather have one curated highlight each day with time to yourself in between? We listen to how you like to travel and build everything around these preferences, from the guides we match you with to the timing of your transfers.

Can you provide examples of curated trips you offer?

We鈥檝e arranged everything from a multi-generational family journey through Iceland with private lodges and glacier adventures, to a celebratory yacht charter in the Mediterranean, to an art-immersive long weekend in Florence with after-hours access to the Uffizi. On the more adventurous side we curate polar expeditions with expert guides, or private safaris that combine both traditional camps and full off-grid experiences. The common thread throughout is that each trip is entirely personal to each client.

How far in advance should one plan a trip?

For the really in-demand destinations – say, Gorilla trekking in Rwanda or a top suite in Europe鈥檚 high summer season – ideally a year out, sometimes more. That said, we鈥檝e also pulled extraordinary trips on much shorter notice, it just depends on how flexible you are and how open to creative solutions.

What are some of the most remote or off-market accommodations you offer?

Some of our favourites are private lodges in Iceland where you can step straight from your hot spring into raw wilderness, or ultra-remote safari camps in Kenya where you won鈥檛 see another vehicle for days. We also work with extraordinary off-market villas that never appear online, and private yachts that are only available through personal relationships.

What are your favorite underrated/under the radar destinations?

Namibia is extraordinary, the landscapes are otherworldly, from the towering red dunes of Sossusvlei to the remote Skeleton Coast, and you can explore them while staying in some of Africa鈥檚 most remarkable lodges. Bhutan is another favourite, a Himalayan kingdom that limits visitor numbers, yet offers exceptional properties from Aman and Six Senses, where days can include private monastery blessings or guided high-altitude hikes. And then there鈥檚 Patagonia 鈥 both Chilean and Argentinean 鈥 where raw wilderness meets a handful of extraordinary retreats.

Do you offer adventure-based luxury experiences, such as private safaris or polar expeditions?

Absolutely. Adventure and luxury are not mutually exclusive for us. We can curate heli-skiing in Iceland or Chile, polar voyages with leading scientists, and African safaris that combine private aviation with exclusive camps. It鈥檚 about giving each of our clients the thrill of real adventure, but with every comfort and detail taken care of.

What is the most unique adventure experience you鈥檝e curated?

One that stands out was a family鈥檚 journey across the Canadian Arctic. We arranged for them to travel with Inuit guides, track polar bears in the wild, and end each evening in a private camp with chefs and naturalists on hand. It was both profoundly adventurous and deeply personal – an experience that left the family with incredible memories, which is really the highest goal we have.

Interview with New York听Jazz听Musician & Mentor Matt Baker

We sat down with New York jazz pianist, entrepreneur, and coach Matt Baker to talk about the New York听jazz听world, his passions, his mentorship program, his own mentors, and the importance of keeping creativity alive at every stage of life.

Matt is a world-renowned jazz听musician heralded as 鈥the Australian piano whiz鈥 by听The New York Times听and described by British music executive Tony Hall as 鈥one of the most respected and versatile pianist-composers yet鈥. Matt leads听The Matt Baker Trio听in New York and performs regularly at听jazz听venues including听Birdland听and听The Blue Note. He tours both within the USA and internationally and has released 6 albums to date.

BAHS Founder Anita Rogers has had the pleasure of working with Matt as her coach for over a year now. Her goals were to step into the jazz world, vocally, master the repertoire and style, learn how to work with an accompanist and band, and then put on a concert. This goal was realized last May when Anita performed with the Matt Baker trio at听听in New York City. We are thrilled to announce that Anita will be doing a second jazz concert with Matt at the gallery on December 16.听

Thanks to a gentle push from Anita, Matt is now carving out space in his schedule to individually mentor a small number of people seeking a creative escape, whether through learning or returning to an instrument, stepping into New York鈥檚 jazz world, singing for pleasure, or even planning and preparing for a live performance at a major NYC venue.

After the interview, we are pleased to share Matt Baker鈥檚 new mentorship program,听The Encore Experience – An Artist鈥檚 Renaissance.听

Matt, can you please tell us a little about yourself?

I鈥檓 from Australia but I moved to New York about 15 years ago when I decided I had to leave Australia because I was plateauing, artistically. I just didn’t have the artistic fulfillment that I really wanted. I had been to New York several times before moving here, so I knew that it was all over here – so I applied for a visa, I got it eventually, and here we are 15 years later.

I’m a jazz musician first and foremost, but I am also a coach, entrepreneur, and photographer.听As a听jazz musician, I perform on the piano at gigs, jazz clubs, festivals, concerts in New York and around the world. I’m a听portrait photographer听as well – my shots inside NYC jazz clubs will be on view at Anita Rogers Gallery this December.

I’m also an听entrepreneur, I run an online course for singers that is not singing lessons, but it teaches singers to gain the confidence to get up on stage and put on a show. It鈥檚 everything that you need to know to be a great band leader, taught by me and three of the world’s top live performing vocalists. It鈥檚 a wonderful course for vocalists.

The fourth thing I do is听mentor.听I have this desire in my life, now at my age to give back and not just do things that benefit and fulfill听me. I have this real big desire to give back and with a bit of a push from Anita, I’ve decided to open up time and space in my life to coach and mentor a select group people who wish to have art and music and joy back into their lives, that they might have had at some point earlier in their lives but have lost. The way that I can do that is by bringing someone into my life, by either taking them around gigs and concerts and showing them the world that I live in, letting them experience the music and the art that I experience, helping them with their own music and art – whether it’s teaching them piano, helping them sing, assisting them in putting on a concert, helping them fulfill those dreams and desires and aspirations they might have had since they were a child even and for a long time. It鈥檚 a flexible program – it鈥檚 whatever works for them and whatever their needs may be – but the goal is to bring back music and joy into their lives.

Who is your mentorship program right for?

It鈥檚 for anyone听yearning for creativity and artistic connection. It鈥檚 for those who are constantly tied up with their job, homework, family and听miss having something like music in their world. It鈥檚 for those who learned an instrument when they were younger, regret giving it up, and would kill to have even a piece of it back. It鈥檚 for those who听aspire to sing for friends at a great New York City venue听but don鈥檛 know how to achieve that. 听It鈥檚 for anyone who is missing something in their soul, artistically, and would like to find it again.

Did you have any mentors in the music world in particular that shaped your approach to your music and your style?

Absolutely. My main mentor is my teacher who I still learn from today,听Taylor Eigsti. It’s been 16 years of lessons with him. He is a fantastic, phenomenal world class pianist. He tours the world continuously, has won two Grammy awards for his albums, and he not only teaches me piano and jazz specifically, but sometimes in our lessons or phone calls, we talk about business, life, the career, and the world of music. So he has held my hand for the last 16 years, but I’ve also had many, many teachers that haven’t been as regular as him in my life but were also formative, including greats like听Benny Green,听James Williams, and听Mulgrew Miller. I was fortunate enough that one of my first teachers was Ella Fitzgerald’s accompanist of 30 years – the great听Paul Smith. He taught me a lot about playing for singers and accompanying music. So yes, I鈥檝e had mentors in music and business for my entire life.

You mentioned how you moved from Australia to New York and understanding that New York was听the听place to be for your career. How would you describe the New York jazz community? Are there any jazz clubs in particular you’d recommend to the readers?

Absolutely. Well,听New York is just a mecca for art and music. Whether it’s jazz music or cabaret or musical theater, Broadway, whether it’s art, painting, sculpture, drawing installations, photography – it’s all here. So, it’s just this听melting pot of culture and creation and art in this city. And everyone wants to be here, so it’s the people that make it, really. Besides the music or the art and photographs you see in the galleries鈥t’s the people. It’s the energy of the people that really makes it so everyone aspires to be here. I find it’s like听everyone is here because they’re on some sort of creative mission听or have some sort of purpose or goal in the arts. It鈥檚 an incredible energy.

Specifically for jazz clubs, there’s so many, and that’s another great thing about why I’m here is because there’s听so much opportunity. Yes, there’s more competition but there’s so much opportunity in the sense of venues. Some of my favorites are听,听, and then other locations that aren’t necessarily jazz clubs, but they’re venues that have jazz on.听I play often at听. And the听, the听,听. But my favorite is definitely the听.

At what age did you first get into music? When did you know that this was such an important aspect of your creative soul?

Well, I got into music at the age of five, I started learning classical piano back home in Australia. At 12, I changed to jazz. And in my late teens, I started to discover a lot of the jazz greats – on whatever instrument. That included people like听Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Frank Sinatra, Mel Torm茅, Shirley Horn, Carmen McRae鈥.all the great singers. And besides my journey with the piano, I really fell in love with vocal jazz. I love the lyrics, the story, and I started to truly love accompanying singers and with my skills as a piano player, I found that I loved creating that bed of support, music, and sound underneath a singer. So in my early 20s, besides pushing a career as a solo artist and as a pianist in a trio, I started to frequently accompany singers. And to extend the answer to the question of how I got where I am today – when I would tour in my late 20s, I would do workshops at jazz clubs for anyone, but most of the people who would come to those workshops were singers who had questions about leading bands and directing bands and – not conducting – but really how to听lead their band onstage. So a lot of my work came from those workshops and came from singers wanting help from me. And I started to become this piano player who really started to听specialize in coaching singers, not in their voices and the singing, but in helping them work with bands and accompanists and lead their bands and be a great front person and put on exceptional shows. That is where my online course grew out of – it came from years of workshops and helping singers, which I still love to do today.

You鈥檝e toured in the U.S. and internationally, you’ve recorded multiple albums, you’ve won many awards. What accomplishment are you most proud of?

That’s a great question. I was a听finalist for three years in a row in Switzerland, in the Montreux International Solo Jazz piano competition. That鈥檚 something that I’m really proud of. I’m really proud of the fact that I’ve worked听15 years in New York City. Like, that’s a really cool thing, and I have achieved most of my goals here – and now I’m constantly making new goals the older I get.

I’m also really proud of the online video course I created.听It was filmed a couple of years ago and took a year to edit and create on the back end. And now it’s been selling for a couple of years and doing really well. So that’s a huge achievement to create something out of nothing and do that, and I think the last thing I’ll say is I鈥檓 ultra-proud and grateful for the community of friends I have around me. My community is huge now – it’s just ever-expanding and it鈥檚 a听beautiful community of people.听Most of them are artistic or musical in some respect, and they’re truly a great support.

What would your best advice be for a person maybe who doesn’t have a creative job or regular creative outlet and is looking to reconnect with that part of themselves? What would you tell them?

Well, at the minimum they need to connect with a friend in that world that can invite them to tag along to events with them, and then start enjoying the things that this friend enjoys. Maybe that snowballs into taking lessons or participating at events, playing their instrument at events. That would be ideal. But even better than a friend is to听get themselves a good mentor or a coach.听Someone who can say, “Okay, what is it that you want to do? What are your dreams, goals, and aspirations? Now let me actually work out methodically how I can make that happen for you. That鈥檚 something I鈥檓 really proud to offer to the community.

What can people expect from your jazz concert at on December 16?

Well, a really听wonderful evening of beautiful, great American songbook, and I’m going to just use the word jazz. Anita is really diving into the world of jazz with this concert. It’s with a really wonderful band in addition to myself and Anita – we have听Tony DePaolis听on double bass and听Aaron Seeber听on the drums. It鈥檚 the same band that we had last May and Anita is going to be presenting a really beautiful show of some fast ones, some ballads, some classics, some newer ones, of a beautiful jazz repertoire, which is going to be a fantastic concert.

Rediscover the part of yourself that never stopped dreaming. A month of private artistic mentorship and musical immersion with acclaimed jazz pianist Matt Baker, designed to reawaken your creative spirit, connect you to world-class artistry, and rekindle the joy of music.

However, for American parents, navigating the British school system can be unexpectedly complex. While the UK and U.S. share a language and certain educational values, the structure, terminology, and admissions culture in London differ markedly from what U.S. families may be used to.

Here are ten key ways in which the London education system diverges from the American model – and what families need to know to make informed, confident decisions.

1. Two Sectors, One Decision

The UK offers two main types of school sectors:

State Schools: Like US public schools, these are free, managed by a local council, and government-funded, with places typically allocated based on proximity to the school. In London, many of the best state schools are heavily oversubscribed, and property prices in catchment areas (i.e., the usual distance you have to live from a school to secure a place) are often over-inflated.

Independent Schools: Also called “private” schools, these are fee-paying and usually academically selective. While only 6鈥7% of children attend private schools across the UK, in London this figure rises to around 20%, and significantly higher in affluent boroughs like Kensington & Chelsea.

2. School Or House First: It Depends On The Sector

State school admissions in London are heavily influenced by where you live, and families typically need to have secured a property – whether rented or purchased -before applying for a school place. As catchment areas can be extremely small, sometimes just a few hundred metres, the exact home address can be critical for those hoping to achieve places at the most popular state schools. This means finding and securing a suitable home comes first, with school admission decisions in the hands of the local authority.

By contrast, independent schools are generally more flexible regarding location; you don鈥檛 need to wait until you鈥檝e signed a lease or purchased a home to register your child, making them a less stressful option for international relocators. However, remaining local to your child鈥檚 school remains important for their wellbeing and your ability to become part of the local parent community.

3. Register As Soon As You Know You Will Need A Place

Unlike in the U.S., where school admissions often allow for flexibility and late applications, London schools – particularly independent ones – require early, strategic planning. For many of the capital鈥檚 most sought-after schools, registration deadlines close well in advance, sometimes just weeks after a child is born. Missing these dates can mean joining long waitlists with little chance of success, no matter how bright or brilliant your child is.

Even state schools, though free and non-selective, require applications to be submitted 6 to 9 months before major entry points in Reception (the September after your child turns 4 years old) or Year 7 (the September after your child turns 11 years old). For American families used to rolling admissions or mid-year starts, the inflexibility of the London system can be a surprise. Acting early is not just helpful 鈥 it is essential.

4. Spring Chickens: London鈥檚 Early Learners

One of the biggest cultural adjustments for American families is how early British children begin formal schooling. Nursery education typically starts around age 2, with children attending at least five morning sessions a week. By the September after a child turns 4, they enter 鈥楻eception鈥 – the first year of compulsory school, equivalent to pre-kindergarten or early kindergarten in the U.S. By age 5, British children are already well into phonics, writing, and numeracy, while many U.S. preschools still focus on exploratory play and socialisation.

This early emphasis on academic readiness often means London children are reading, writing, and performing basic arithmetic well before many of their American counterparts. As a result, children arriving from the U.S. may need additional support to bridge the gap, particularly if entering the system mid-year or without prior nursery experience.

5. Competitive Admissions In The Independent Sector

While admissions to London鈥檚 independent schools vary – ranging from first-come, first-served and academically selective processes to a ballot – most admissions occur at fixed, key entry points: 4+ (the start of formal schooling), 7+ (the transition into preparatory school), 11+ (the most common entry into senior school), and 13+ (often the typical entry point for boarding schools).

At highly competitive schools such as St Paul鈥檚 and Westminster, demand far exceeds available places, often attracting 10 or more applicants per spot at key entry points. Therefore, choosing the right nursery or school at each stage is crucial for families targeting London鈥檚 top tier schools; many begin preparing their children two to three years in advance through tutoring and familiarisation with the admissions process. This level of early commitment and strategic planning can come as a surprise to American families.

6. A Dying British Tradition: Single-Sex Education

While co-educational schools are increasingly common in the U.S., London remains home to a significant number of prestigious single-sex institutions. Many of the capital鈥檚 most sought-after schools remain boys-only or girls-only. The rationale is often rooted in history and pedagogy: single-sex environments are seen to reduce social distractions, tailor teaching methods to gender-specific learning styles, and cultivate leadership and confidence.

However, attitudes are shifting: historic boys鈥 schools such as Westminster and King鈥檚 College School, Wimbledon are transitioning to co-educational models to reflect evolving societal expectations, promote gender inclusivity, and offer greater flexibility for families.

7. Boarding: The Very Best of British Education

Boarding schools are a longstanding and respected feature of the British education system, typically beginning at 13, although some schools offer weekly or flexi-boarding from as young as 8. Unlike in the U.S., where boarding may carry associations with behavioural or academic challenges, in the UK – and particularly among London families – boarding is viewed as prestigious. These schools offer academic rigour, extended school days, and exceptional extracurricular and sporting facilities.

While London itself has very few boarding schools, many families in the capital choose to send their children to leading boarding schools within 1-hour of central London, in areas such as Surrey, Berkshire, Oxfordshire, and beyond.These schools provide more space, structured routines, and a strong sense of community that many London day schools, limited by space and urban constraints, cannot match.

8. Uniforms Are Uniform

School uniforms are the norm in virtually all London schools. Typically, they include blazers and ties, and some traditional schools even require boaters or academic gowns. In addition to everyday uniform, most schools also require a full games or PE kit, often including items for multiple sports such as rugby, hockey, or cricket, depending on the term. For American families accustomed to more casual dress codes and flexible athletic wear, this emphasis on uniformity, formality, and presentation – both in and out of the classroom – can be surprising, reflecting broader British values of discipline, identity, and tradition.

9. A Narrower Academic Focus

By age 16, British children sit GCSE exams in around 9 to 11 subjects. These exams are pivotal, as they assess a broad range of core academic skills across disciplines such as English, Maths, Sciences, Humanities, and Languages. Performance in GCSEs strongly influences progression to the next stage of education.

After completing GCSEs, most students specialise by choosing just 3 to 4 A Level subjects, focusing deeply on areas relevant to their intended university courses or career paths. This concentrated study allows for advanced mastery but also means students cover fewer subjects overall compared to their American counterparts.

10. There Is No Single Best School, Just The Right One For Your Family

London鈥檚 educational landscape is not only academically demanding – it is culturally complex. For families arriving from the U.S., success in navigating this system is rarely about choosing the most well-known school. It is about understanding a different set of expectations, traditions, and unspoken rules. The right school for one family may not suit another, even if it ranks highly on paper. Academic ability, personality, commute, and family values all influence what constitutes the 鈥榖est fit鈥 – a nuance that鈥檚 easily lost without local knowledge and long-term perspective.

That said, American families who prefer to stay within a familiar educational framework do have the option of enrolling in one of London鈥檚 well-established U.S. curriculum schools. End-Of-Life Midwife

This week, we had the privilege of talking to Martha Roth, an end-of-life midwife. Also known as a death doula, an end-of-life midwife guides individuals and their loved ones through the dying process. They make sure the person鈥檚 wishes are heard, understood, and respected. They can help navigate difficult conversations and advise on the options available.

Before transitioning into end-of-life care, Martha spent several decades working as a birth doula and midwife. She recently took the time to share some of her insights on death, dying, and how we can support those we love through this sacred life transition.

鈥淵ou and I will die. 听This is a given, entirely proper. 听It is a whorl in the thumbprint of the Maker of Life. 听But the manner of our dying is not a given. 听That, with deep labor, is up to us. 听This is one of the life gifts entrusted to us at birth, dazzling as the night sky and burdensome as any vision is of how it all could be.鈥

“That is a quote from the book, 听who identifies himself as an activist, teacher, author and farmer. He has been working with the dying for more than 35 years.听 His offerings have been a valuable resource for me, particularly this book.

I call myself an end-of-life midwife. I have spent the past 40 years as a doula and then a midwife attending births primarily in homes but also birth centers and hospitals.

I now have the opportunity to use my doula and beginning-of-life midwifery skills for end-of-life care.

We are at a time in the United States where certain conditions have become evident, specifically that there is no sustainable healthcare system in this country and that the business of health insurance has sabotaged the delivery of healthcare.听 This reality along with the aging of the American populace has provided a perfect moment for this midwifery model-of-care to be used to promote an awareness of the obstacles present in caring humanely for the dying.

The focus of this model of care is planning ahead with all those who will be participating in the care to enhance an individual鈥檚 life experience through to their dying.

I would encourage all of us to begin having conversations with those we love and who love us well before the need is there.

Over the past few decades a great number of books on death and dying have been published.听 The authors of these books have come at the subject from the angle of their own expertise whether it is spiritual, medical, holistic, religious, personal or psychological.

Regardless of your bent you can find someone who has published a critique from their perspective on how we live well or poorly until we die well or poorly.

We have tremendous resources here in the US. However, these resources are being used to aggressively extend lives with a deep resistance to accepting that our lives are supposed to end.听 It seems to be a moment when we can redirect our resources toward a more humane model of dying.

I am using the home birth model of care because that is what I have been doing. It is true that not everyone desires care in their home.

The majority of people who are asked say they would prefer to die at home and yet a majority of people end up spending their last days or longer in the hospital.

I have been consulted about the conditions that have developed, most commonly around an aging parent.听This is my opportunity to recommend that there be a meeting with all those involved with this person. I recommend that there be an objective, knowledgeable person present at the table.

She will have the answers to specific questions that will likely come up and will make sure that the focus stays on the individual who is dying.

Through my personal experience and what I have learned from others,听how a person dies proves to be one of the most important factors in the health of the relationships of those family members and friends who live on.听

If there are those present who feel they are unable to honor the wishes expressed by the dying person, then they are invited to leave the table without judgment.

Resistance to accepting an unfamiliar path is most often fear-based.听Fear is often present when knowledge is lacking.

Once that person鈥檚 questions have been answered and desires have been made clear, then a plan can begin to take shape.

What I know from my midwifery work is that IF there is no plan or there is poor preparation, care decisions will likely be made based upon expediency, habit or fear of litigation often at great cost to the individual and family.

There will naturally be questions regarding time frame, legalities, paperwork, specific laws, etc.

Once the conversation has begun, you can ask specific questions.听Some of these questions help to normalize the discussion.

For example, asking a person what they think they would like done with their body after they die can be very helpful.听 There was one gentleman who said he would like to donate his body to a medical center.听 The family had no idea he wanted to do that and we spoke about the need to plan ahead because there is paperwork that needs to be filled out ahead of time in order to make this donation.听 In this case it not only gave the family a task to accomplish but a certain feeling of gratification that they learned this information when there was time to get the necessary paperwork in order.听 There was also an opportunity for the family to discuss how this information pushed them to rethink what would be necessary for them to do at the time of his death.听 It also brought a moment of sadness as the family members took in the reality that, in time, there would be a body to be handled.

In another case an individual wanted to be cremated on a funeral pyre on her property.听 In consultation with the funeral home it was learned that only one State allows for funeral pyres and she did not live in that State.听 There ensued some joking about how to spirit her body out of State to honor her wishes.

The answer to this question is only part of the point.听 What matters is that the person is able to say, 鈥渢his is what I want鈥.听 It can often be a great relief to the family to have information that eliminates any potential disagreements that might have arisen after the death.听 This working together to honor the well-thought-out plans of a dying person can bring together those who might otherwise splinter.

Another useful question that can normalize the planning and bring the family to a place of comfort is to ask the individual what they would like said about them after they die.

Again this is an active task that provides valuable information from the dying person.

The conversation also addresses the practical questions of necessary paperwork, who is responsible for what, is there a full understanding should Do Not Resuscitate and Do Not Transport orders come into play.听 It can be surprising how little individuals actually understand about these orders.

Then there is the question of the right to die with dignity. Recently, there has been progress in New York State regarding an individual鈥檚 right to medical aid in dying. The NYS Assembly and Senate have passed the MAID bill. It has been sent to Governor Hochul and awaits her signature.

Until these bills are passed into law, one option individuals can choose to control their own life and death is VSED (Voluntarily Stopping Eating and Drinking).

This is an active choice initiated by the dying person and supported by loved ones.

Many of us have had pets that let us know when they鈥檝e had enough by declining nourishment and hydration. 听We don鈥檛 force-feed these animals. 听We hold them, we soothe them, we love them and we thank them for being so smart. 听Don鈥檛 we, as humans deserve that kind of respectful care?

Today I suggest that, if you haven鈥檛 already, you make a plan to have The Conversation about death, your death, with those who love you and who you love.

Some of you might already be familiar with these resources. There is a national volunteer organization,听, which has a presence in all 50 States. 听听It offers comprehensive details on all aspects of end-of-life planning.

Another important organization,听, has been working for over 20 years 鈥渢o achieve better care and more choices for the dying through advocacy and education campaigns, and free counseling for patients and their families鈥.

Initiating the conversation is often the most difficult part but once it has begun it will not stop. 听There can be great joy in discussing death and dying. 听It comes with being alive.

And finally as an exercise I suggest that you think about what you would like said about you after you die:

Either write the beginning of your own remembrance or ask someone who loves you to write it.”

Can you explain a little bit about the connection between nutrition and fertility and why eating right is so important during all stages of a woman’s fertility journey?

When we eat right and take care of our bodies, our bodies function at their best 鈥 including our reproductive system. Nutrition is one of the most important factors for improving fertility and the best part is that it is one of the only factors that is 100% within your control to change! Your diet and lifestyle can reduce inflammation, balance hormones and improve egg and sperm quality. It鈥檚 also important to note that there is no magic supplement, nutrient or food group for improving fertility, but rather, looking at the big picture of your diet and lifestyle and bringing it all into balance.

Do you have some simple tips for adjusting your routine to boost fertility?

Individual Selecting Potatoes Into A Woven Basket

Yes! Three easy tips that you can implement right away –

1) Focus on getting good, restorative sleep every night 鈥 7-9 hours is ideal.

2) Aim to eat every 3-4 hours for balanced blood sugar (insulin levels impact the function of your sex hormones)

3) Aim to eat a mix of fruits + veggies +lean protein + healthy fats + slowly digested carbohydrates such as whole grains to ensure you are meeting your needs

How does exercising impact fertility?

Great question! According to the research, moderate exercise can have a positive impact on fertility, but frequent and intense exercise can negatively impact your ability to conceive, especially too much cardio. Too much exercise may impact ovarian reserves (as in the number of eggs you have in reserve). The sweet spot seems to be low to moderate exercise, 1-3 times per week (including walking). Heavy or vigorous activity, 4 or more times per week can reduce overall fertility and pregnancy rates.

Do you have any book recommendations for women on their fertility journey looking to further educate themselves?

Yes! I love听. She is another registered dietitian, and her advice is based on the latest, cutting edge science in the fertility space 鈥 which sometimes means going against conventional wisdom on this topic! It鈥檚 a great read.

What is your guidance for women during the “two week wait”? Should they behave 100% as if they are pregnant or is there some wiggle room when it comes to caffeine, sushi, a glass or two of wine, lunch meats etc.?

My personal opinion? Until you are confirmed pregnant, it鈥檚 OK to enjoy the things you can鈥檛 enjoy while pregnant (this is assuming you are enjoying those things in moderation 鈥 such as a glass of wine – not heavy alcohol usage which could cause actual harm). 听But, at the end of the day, this also depends on your personal risk tolerance. Scientifically, it鈥檚 unlikely in the two weeks leading up to a pregnancy test, that enjoying food and drink you typically eat, would have a negative impact on your ability to have a positive pregnancy test or lead to a later miscarriage.

Many women trying to conceive are busy trying to balance work, life, and eating right. 听Do you have any go-to recipes or suggestions for quick and nourishing weekday lunches?

My biggest suggestion 鈥 a little meal prep goes a long way! 90% of being healthy is having a solid plan or routine in place. You don鈥檛 need to make elaborate recipes to have healthy items on hand. Use the weekend or a free moment to cook a few uncomplicated things 鈥 a pot of quinoa, a tray of roasted veggies, some grilled chicken and maybe a bean-based salad. 听Mix and match for meals throughout the week!

This week, we sat down with Carol Pepper of听. Pepper, a trusted advisor to families around the world, sets up and consults for family offices, internationally, and also offers complementary services and financial education. She started听Pepper International听in 2001; prior to starting her own firm, she had a successful corporate career (Salomon Brothers, JP Morgan, Credit Suisse) and was a Senior Portfolio Manager for the Rockefeller Family Office, where she managed over $1 Billion. Pepper owns 100% of her firm; she personally provides confidential services to her clients and coordinates a group of top experts on behalf of clients when required.

In addition, Pepper is the the author of听. She is passionate about empowering women to educate themselves on financial topics and works hard to help women gain confidence and knowledge about managing money and investing. She is also a Member of the Advisory Committee of the United Nations Capital Development Fund and in November 2021, she was honored to be named one of the Top 20 Family Office Advisors in the world by听.

I would advise families to read the studies that have come out over the years that prove how important a well-structured family office is to long term success. 听It is consistently true that over 90% of families lose their wealth in three to four generations. 听To become a highly successful family enjoying ten generations or more, it is critical to follow the path and processes that have been proven to work鈥

If you have a family, be willing to learn for their sakes. It is an unfortunate fact that over 90% of women will at some point end up managing the family finances due to the death or incapacity of a spouse, so make sure you can take care of everyone when it is your turn. 听You never want to be at the mercy of Wall Street or any Private Banker鈥hey have their own agendas, and you need to be very clear on your agenda for your own financial safety and security.

Q & A With Carol Pepper

Can you tell us a little bit your background and how you came to start Pepper International?

I grew up in Sudbury, Massachusetts, where my Father ran the local VFW as a World War II Veteran for many years.听 He was very dedicated to helping other veterans, and he always marveled that he survived five beach landings as a Private in the Pacific War arena. He ended up working as an assistant directly for General MacArthur.听 He was an incredible man.听 My mother was a dedicated homemaker who was also an accountant, who made me balance my checkbook to the penny every month as a kid.听 In those days, this was with paper and pencil!

I attended Bryn Mawr College on an academic scholarship, and I am truly the product of the Philanthropy from both Bryn Mawr alums and the听.听 I studied Philosophy, and I was in love with creative writing.听 I have continued to be a student of life and philosophy, and I had an incredible four years at Bryn Mawr.听 The women there opened my eyes to the possibilities of what women could do, and I thrived and became more ambitious, thanks to their inspiration.

I took a job on Wall Street during the roaring 80鈥檚 because I needed to start paying back my student loans.听 It was a big jump to move from an all-women鈥檚 college to the rough and tumble of being the only female analyst in the Mergers Department at Salomon Brothers!听 If you have seen 鈥淲olf of Wall Street,鈥 it was pretty accurate.听 From there I was hired by JP Morgan, and they paid for me to attend Columbia Business School.听 It is hard to imagine that this year I am celebrating 41 years in Finance!听 While at JP Morgan, I moved into the Private Banking Division.听 From JP Morgan I went to other top banks and was eventually recruited to work for the Rockefeller Family Office as a Senior Portfolio Manager.听 I managed over $1 Billion, with a focus on Social Impact and ESG investments.

Working with the Rockefeller Family Office gave me an insight into one of the greatest American families.听 I was so impressed by their philanthropic spirit and the thoughtful ways that they prepared their children to steward the family fortune.听 They were amazing employers, and I will forever appreciate the time I worked with the Family Office. When the internet really became part of our professional lives in 2000, I could see how it would radically change the way we deliver wealth management services, to a more virtual model.听 I worked briefly at Morgan Stanley and helped them to design the very first online services for ultra-high net worth clients. It was an incredibly exciting time

I had always dreamed of running my own business, so I started my own firm, in 2001. For the last 24 years, I have helped families set up and run their own Family Offices and have acted as an independent Chief Investment Officer.听 It has been exhilarating to be a pioneer in the creation of the Family Offices as a concept and a reality.听 It has called on me to understand finance, technology, cybersecurity, and tax planning.听 My job is to put together the best possible team to help each family achieve their goals. But the key skill is to help families articulate their vision for the family and to make it a reality. It is incredibly satisfying work.

I have always been focusing on helping women, as women have always helped me! 听I wrote a book called听 with top journalist Camilla Webster. That book brought me to television, and I have appeared monthly on financial TV as an expert for Bloomberg, Fox, and MSNBC. Creating the book was incredibly satisfying; to take the most important skills I have observed in the most successful families and to make them available to every woman.

Women at every level of society have been programed to think that females are not good at managing money and investments.听 In fact, numerous studies prove the opposite is true!听 Women are actually wonderful investors and often outperform their male peers. Women bring long term thinking to finance and don鈥檛 get rattled in a crisis.听 I love helping women see their own genius and power and a person capable of great positive impact for their families and the world.

What has been the most challenging part of working in a sector dominated by men?

I think the greatest challenge is to remember that men and women do think differently! 听A general observation, for example, is that men will focus on the performance of a portfolio, especially in comparison to the performance of other portfolios, so they are very competitive and want to win and be the 鈥渂est,鈥 in whatever they do.听 Women focus on the context- what the portfolio is doing for the family, and long-term results rather than just winning in the short term. Both perspectives are important: we need to see both the forest and the trees!听 When we work with men, it is important to use language they can understand and are interested in, while also showing them why the context and our long-term perspective are equally critical.听 We both bring something to the discussion.听 The key is to listen to each other and collaborate.

In many ways, I think the Family Office is a feminine concept, because it focuses on measuring success over multiple generations.

What are you proudest of?

I am most proud of the private Family Constitutions I have helped families create. I know that these documents will be guiding the family for multiple generations, and it is humbling to think that I helped them articulate their most private values and vision.听 I am also very proud that in 2017 my firm was named Best Boutique by the Society of Trust and Estate Planners.听 This is the Oscars of our industry and was so delighted to win this award! 听I am also proud that I am the only female owned Family Office Consulting Firm that has built Family Offices on five continents!

What distinguishes your company from others?

I do all the work myself. When families hire me for such sensitive and confidential matters, they are getting my advice personally, with my 41 years of direct experience.听 They are also getting access to my trusted group of top experts.听 This saves time and money.听 I have been told by families I am more focused on the holistic happiness of the family- I am able to discuss personal matters, family crisis, family illness, succession in business, security, corporate matters, spiritual matters, and investments.听 I feel that we all become more powerful when we are centered in our values and our habits support fulfilling our goals.听 听I am often the closest confidante to the family, the one person who knows the whole picture.听 I take that responsibility very seriously, and I try to be worthy of the trust that is placed in me.听 While most Family Office experts are either focused on the money or the personal issues, I am able to address both.

What is your best advice for a client at the start of setting up a family office?

I would say the most important thing to focus on first is the family values.听 If they have never gone through an exercise to truly articulate what the family stands for, it is a satisfying exercise.听 I have a very structured process that I use, which helps set the table for the family.听 Once they really know as a group 鈥渨ho they are,鈥 and 鈥渨hat they stand for,鈥 all other decisions become easier to make.

The next thing I would say is to hire an experienced consultant to help them with the set up.听 Often times, a CFO who is near retirement is asked to take on this task.听 He may be fantastic at Corporate matters, but he is not expert in this highly specialized area.听 He can run the process, but he needs an expert to help him be successful in this new role.

Women often do not have an equal voice when it comes to financial decisions and planning. How can you help change the role of women in family offices?

Due mostly to tradition, women are often not included in key Family Office roles.听 There is an assumption that sons will be better at running the Family Office than daughters.听 I have even seen women who must endure their brother as their Trustee, even when they have an MBA, and he does not.听 I always work to include all family members in the initial design of Family Values and the Family Constitution.听 There is usually little resistance to women attending these meetings, and from there it is easier to keep including them as matters become more financial.听 Things are changing, even in family offices, as women become more educated and are working at top jobs.听 I have seen a real improvement over the years, and I always try to support the equal participation of female family members in all discussions. 听听As the outside expert, I am able to assert my influence on their behalf.听 I have seen time and time again that women bring valuable skills and perspectives to the Family Office when they are included.

What would be your best advice for someone who doesn鈥檛 feel confident in their financial knowledge but would like to learn more?

I have been a lifelong student, and I encourage everyone to continue learning!听 If Finance is an area of concern, I can recommend my book听.听 I also have a YouTube channel called听, and I offer free courses on setting up a Family Office and on Investing 101.听 There is even a course called 鈥淟ove and Money,鈥 and 鈥淔riends and Money鈥 for young adults and parents.听 A Google Search on 鈥渋nvesting education鈥 can lead to many free resources to get started.听 Many Private Banks and Universities offer courses geared to family members who want to become financially literate.听 Women are very good at investing once they learn the language of finance.

You started your company 24 years ago. The world has changed a lot since then and you鈥檝e helped families adapt to these changes in terms of their financial planning and security. What would you say are the biggest issues that have arisen in the past decade?

The biggest change over the last 24 years has been the increasing use of technology in every aspect of life.听 We think nothing of looking at our portfolio or bank account online now, but 24 years ago it was not as simple as it is today.听 Technology is an amazing tool, but it must always be a tool that we humans control, especially as AI begins to infiltrate every aspect of our online lives.

While technology makes it much easier to collaborate remotely via Zoom and work with people around the world, it has also made wealthy families bigger targets for cyberattacks.听 We need to make sure that our systems are strong to resist online threats to our finances and our family members.听 It is much more difficult today to be anonymous, and if you are wealthy, it is easier than ever to be targeted for kidnapping, fraud, and blackmail.听 It is important to have a skilled security team as part of the Family Office, to keep everyone as safe as possible. 听The safe and responsible use of technology and the prevention of crime are now starkly in focus.

What is the best financial skill that families should teach their children?听 What tool can help teach that skill?

The best financial tool that parents have at their disposal is the humble allowance.听 I am very inspired by the Allowance Contract that John D. Rockefeller II had with his son, John D. Rockefeller III, which was published in Smithsonian Magazine. 听At the time, John D. II was the wealthiest man in America, and his son received a modest allowance of $1.50 per week.听 He had to save 20%, give 20% to charity and could spend 60%.听 He had to write down what he spent, and his Father would personally review his accounting.听 If he did the accounting correctly, he received a raise; if he did not, his allowance was reduced.听 His father would also match fund any amounts given to charity or savings above the required 20%.

This is a simple formula that any family can implement using three piggy banks: one for savings, one for spending and one for charity.听 By implementing this system, you gift your children with an incredible habit that will serve them for the rest of their lives.听 It is always critical to know what you are spending, to save money and to give back.

We understand how important giving back is to you. Do you have a favorite cause that you鈥檇 like to share with our readers?

There are so many good causes out there, too many to list.听 I am inspired by charities that help veterans to honor my father, and research for the treatment of dementia to honor my mother.听 I am a big fan of educational charities, and organizations that support women and kids suffering from domestic violence.听 I love defending endangered animals and those who are too weak to defend themselves.听 I advise families to pick causes that align with their values, and to bring their children into the world of Philanthropy at an early age.听 听The great families of the 19th听Century who still have their fortunes were all highly charitable, and I believe that caring for the world is a key attribute of long term, multigenerational happiness, and success.

After having her son in 2020, she realized that even after years of competitive swimming, lifeguarding, and coaching, she had some intense anxiety when it came to taking him around the water that first summer. So she dove back into learning new tips and tricks to share with the nanny community, mainly on her Instagram , and has been talking about it ever since.

Additionally, Carrie mentors nannies through a variety of services on her听听and also locally where she lives in Indianapolis by planning play dates and nanny events for networking, socializing, and training opportunities with her support group,听.

8 Top Water Safety Tips

1. First and foremost, this is honestly the biggest tip —听enroll your children in swim lessons TODAY. Swimming is a life skill that can literally save a person鈥檚 life. When you鈥檙e looking for a class or an instructor if you鈥檙e not going the ISR (Infant Swimming Resource) route, you want to clarify that you want an听emphasis on survival skills. Rolling onto their back to float. Kicking to the wall. Holding onto the wall and moving to the ladder or stairs.

2. Assign a water watcher. When you think everyone is watching the pool, no one is watching. If you鈥檙e hosting a party or a get together, rotate water watchers or hire a lifeguard. Water watchers need to be听sober听and they need to be听adults. Children cannot watch other children.

3. Have听as many barriers in place as possible听to prevent a child quietly sneaking out into the pool. Pool covers, a fence, locking gates, and door alarms (on the doggy door too!) are all necessary if you鈥檙e a homeowner with a pool.

4. Drain the water away when you鈥檙e through with play.听It takes only 2 inches for a child to drown. Empty the tub and make sure the plug is out of reach, the water tables, and the kiddie pools too.

5. Know the signs of drowning听鈥 it is not always splashy and loud like it is in the movies. It can be, but other times it is quiet. The person (child) is in the vertical position with their arms straight out and they might not be able to get their mouth above the water.

6. Not all drownings are fatal. There are some with a quick enough rescue that there is no damage to the person. Others involve severe brain damage. If you come across someone who has experienced a drowning incident, give them 2 rescue breaths before continuing CPR.

7. Floaties give children a false sense of security. They are marketed as a learn to swim aid and make parents and caregivers believe they are necessary for learning water skills. They are not. They do not.听Lifejackets are absolutely necessary for being on a moving watercraft听and specialized floats like puddle jumpers are approved for walking on boat docks and pool decks. None of these have been approved for swimming in pools.

8.Choose bright swim suits to stand out in the water. Blues and greens blend in, so find other options like red, orange, yellow, and pink. If you鈥檙e unable to find a suit with those colors, throw on a bright swim shirt and have the added benefit of sun protection.
