While the summer is often thought of as an off-season for the聽art聽world, there are still plenty of exceptional exhibitions on view this summer around the world. This week we鈥檝e gathered our favorite summer exhibitions for聽art聽collectors and connoisseurs to add to their must-see list.
A visit to the Rothko Museum should be on every聽art聽collector鈥檚 bucket list. This special museum, built in the birth city of Mark Rothko, hosts permanent exhibitions of Rothko鈥檚 work, as well as exceptional temporary programming. The Tan Ping exhibition will be on view through the end of August; the show features work from the entirety of the聽artist鈥檚 varied oeuvre, including woodcuts, paintings, large and small-scale works, and more.
The last thirty years of Michelangelo鈥檚 life (he lived until 89, a remarkable feat in the 16th century) were marked by an incredible energy and productivity. This exhibition highlights his work during that time, and explores the effect his various collaborations, commissions, friendships, and personal struggles had on the evolution of the work. The show will be on view through July 28.
This exhibition takes viewers through the history of fables, from their origination in India and Greece to聽Kal墨la wa Dimna to 17th century La Fontaine. The show has over 133 works, including stunning Arabic, Persian, and Turkish manuscripts. The exhibition will be on view through July 21.
This year marks the 60th iteration of the prestigious Venice Biennale. This year is curated by Adriano Pedrosa, the first Latin American to curate the international exhibition.聽. The biennale is open through November 24. While in town this summer, be sure to visit the city鈥檚 other聽art聽institutions, many of which are hosting special exhibitions in conjunction with the biennale. We recommend聽Willem De Kooning E L’italia at the Accademia聽(through September 15) and聽Osman Yousefzada, presented by Fondazione Berengo in partnership with the Victoria & Albert Museum at Palazzo Franchetti.
The 81st edition of the Whitney Biennial runs through August 11. This year鈥檚 exhibition features 71聽artists, each exploring issues related to today鈥檚 society, including the effect of AI on the聽art聽world, race and gender issues, politics, and more.
If you haven鈥檛 seen it yet, be sure to visit the Brooklyn Museum before July 7. This incredible exhibition – the largest to date of the Dean Collection – features work by Gordon Parks, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Lorna Simpson, Kehinde Wiley, Nina Chanel Abney, and more.
Anita Rogers Gallery鈥檚 Summer Group Exhibition highlights the works of three contemporary female聽artists. Lobel, a former set designer who worked on Broadway productions and with The Metropolitan Opera for years, presents abstracted landscapes and cityscapes, both as paintings and tapestries. Mirjamali is a young painter living in 聽Tehran, Iran exhibiting works on paper grappling with the human body, struggle, pain, and beauty. terry presents bold oil on paper paintings on which she states: 鈥渕y paintings honor the struggles of Black women healing from the denial of suffrage that benefited other people and not ourselves.鈥
